At the first stop of the 2022 Mare Nostrum Tour, Michael Andrew took on a FULL event schedule. This included swimming 50s and 100s of every stroke, with finals of some of those 100s and skins (potentially 4 rounds per event) for the 50s. Andrew describes his lineup and, understandably, the fatigue he felt by the end of it.

At 14yrs old Gunnar Bentz and the Litherland triplets swam 21 events in 3 days. Final event 4x200fr relay and they missed the national record by .24. They only swam one 50meter. Michael Andrew has a ways to go.
Age group event is not like Mare Nostrum Barcelona. In Barcelona Finals 16 events swum in 1 hour with a 30 minute break after 8 events to have podium medal presentations which all swimmers took part in regardless of their schedule.
Just to be exact,he didn’t swim all 50s in Monaco. He didn’t swim 50 breast I don’t think?!?
He should be swimming the 100 free every chance he gets to work on his freestyle while breathing instead of breathholding.
Dude’s building endurance for that sub-30 last 50 in 200 IM 💀
We’ll see…
My bet is on Katie Ledecky to swim a faster last 50 meters in the women’s 1500 meter freestyle.
MA is simply a superb athlete, albeit through a very different mode of training and racing. While some have criticized him FOR YEARS, I’ve always been one to sit back and say: let his results speak for the validity of his training and coaching methodology. Well, Tokyo was a pretty good endorsement, and Worlds ought to continue to confirm that. I think he’s a decent role model, gives good press interviews, and LIKES the kids who are his fans. I vote + on MA.
His performance at trials was a pretty good endorsement. In Tokyo not so much.
I mean, the man A-finaled in each of his events at the Olympic Games. I kind of get where you’re going with that, but still….his “worst” finish was 5th place at the Olympic Games. That’s still a pretty damn good result
*4th (50 free)
**5th (200 IM)
he won a team medal in Tokyo which by his own admission from worlds the previous year…doesn’t count.
You’re clearly twisting his words, at 2019 worlds he said when he won a medal for swimming in the Heats it wasn’t that important, which is true, didn’t mention anything about team swimming and he didn’t say the words “didn’t count”
I’m pretty sure he has been incorporating in some traditional sessions in since Tokyo
You can’t do that with a sample size of one.
You can if he’s literally the only variable being assessed.
His problematic history though, along with the racist Insta posts this week are a bridge way too far for me.
Yes he’s a unique talent, but a role model? I don’t think so.
What other training methodologies has he tried that we can compare to? (And even then, what order did he do them in? How old was he during each one? I far too often end up making the case that we can almost never know what the absolute best #1 training methodology is for anyone.)
And oh no, what was the Instagram post? (I tried to just ignore the “role model” part because I’m with you in general, no thanks.)
That’s fair – don’t know how he’d do with other training. And the assessment of his free in his IM as opposed to the 50 suggests he could definitely benefit from alternative methods.
Urgh on Insta it was a ‘joke’ that he went along with that was anti evolution but compared a non-white person to ‘the missing link’.
Ya, obviously his training has gotten him to a pretty high level but I always think that about any high-level athlete. Whatever ya did clearly “worked” because you’re better than 99.9% of all other people, but what if you’d changed X,Y or Z – could they have been 0.5% better? Who knows!
The Instagram post wasn’t even close to racist. He was captioning his own facial expression. He was joking around with his dad
Racist insta posts? Seriously? Care to share some of them if you’re going to make such a claim?
He is not racist
Without an individual medal from the FINA World Aquatics Championships or the Summer Olympic Games.
I’ll buy into the hype once Michael Andrew wins a gold medal at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in an individual 100 meter event.
