Michael Andrew on Swimming 200 IM: “This is me committing to it again”

2025 TYR Pro Swim Series — Westmont

Video captured by Barry Revzin.

In his first domestic LCM competition as a sun devil, Michael Andrew took an impressive win in Westmont, touching first in the 100 breast in 1:00.8 after clocking a 1:00.6 in the prelims. After the race, Andrew was happy with the swim but says he’s still learning and adjusting to his new training home in Tempe.

He also affirmed that he is once again going to be putting more emphasis on the 200 IM, meaning we could see him race in the event as soon as this weekend.

That anecdote starting around the 1:40ish mark is real depressing if you think about it too long. Poor guy.

Tho fr, you do love to see him committing to the 2 IM. I’m not against saying he has more potential in that event than anyone we’ve ever seen.

As much as MA rubs me the wrong way I do root for his success. Lord knows we need a breastroker, and I’m just really glad he broke free from his dad and is putting in some real work.

I think everybody wants to see MA do the IM. His 50s of each stroke individually are great. It feels like it should add up to a great 2IM. The 2IM is his trail to redemption.

Honestly great 100s are more important than great 50s for 200IMs.

But he’s been pretty great at the 100s other than free through his career aswell anyway.

What events does 200IM conflict with at Worlds? MA will have to go through Casas or Foster for a 2IM spot unless one of them doesn’t swim it. Is that a possibility? 100BR and stroke 50s are a clearer path for MA. Tougher competition in the 50fr and 100fly.

I would imagine it is very hard to train for the 200IM in your own. MA did it successfully before when he dropped 1:55, but repeating that level over and over again requires others swimmers pushing you in training I would think.

Thanks, Coleman!

And best wishes to MA. America loves comeback stories and second chances!

Okay: thank you Barry!

Coleman: why Brooklyn? What else are you hoping to delve into?

Did you consider Philly at all?

If he builds the endurance, the 200BR could be a more natural event for him than the 50BR. I can’t recall any recent championship 50BR where he was able to stay with the top internationals.

2022 Worlds Budapest
Gold: Nic Fink (USA) – 26.45
Silver: Nicolo Martinenghi (Italy) – 26.48
Bronze: Michael Andrew (USA) – 26.72
Now you have Qin Haiyang and Peaty in the mix and Martinenghi is still active. So tough path to medal but another Bronze might be possible.

He’s doing exactly what us munching chips in these comment sections have been saying he should for a very long time. There’s no way a negative spin on it isn’t pure bad faith
