Michael Andrew destroyed his lifetime best 200 IM time in the Thursday prelims session of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials Wave II, blasting a 1:56.25 to take the top spot in the semifinals tonight.
Andrew’s previous lifetime best was 1:56.83 from the Pro Swim Series in March 2020.
This prelims swim makes him the 5th all-time fastest performer in the country, bumping Abrahm DeVine to #6.
All-Time Fastest U.S. Performers in 200 Meter IM
- Ryan Lochte – 1:54.00 (2011)
- Michael Phelps – 1:54.16 (2011)
- Eric Shanteau – 1:55.36 (2009)
- Chase Kalisz – 1:55.40 (2018)
- Michael Andrew – 1:56.25 (2021)
Andrew took out the race fast. At the 150-meter mark he was under World Record pace. Ryan Lochte still holds the World Record, set at 1:54.00. Lochte finished in 2nd place this morning (1:58.48).
Andrew’s Splits:

1:26.41 | 32.76 |
1:56.25 | 29.84 |
World Record Splits:

24.89 | |
53.48 | 28.59 |
1:26.51 | 33.03 |
1:54.00 | 27.49 |
I wonder how much he trained to specifically hit 28.5 or better free split.
Yikes if Manuel doesn’t qualify in the 50m, this relay is in trouble. For comparison this is what the Australian girls posted in their prelims
McKeon 52.19
C1 52.78
Wilson 53.06
Harris 53.23
C2 53.35
O’Callaghan 53.57
And all but McKeon swam faster in the finals with 4 under 53
How ahead does he need to be to avoid someone being able to hitch a ride with him for 150 then zoom past him?
2 seconds will probably be pretty tight.
god’s plan for MA to succeed or many others to fail? His guiding confusion.
.58 drop for a 2-IM LC is fantastic, I wouldn’t call it destroyed
If only he could come back in around 29 in the final…
Michael Andrew will die in the last 50 while Kalisz and Lochte will roar past him.
MA finishing under 30…big things coming!
will we finally see someone else than Phelps or Lochte go under 1:55?
who?
i forgot…were they wearing the supersuits when they swam those times?
No, the times were from 2011 – post suits. Lochte’s previous WR, 1:54.10, was from the suit era in 2009.
Lochte’s WR is from 2011, so post supersuit era. They also both have a number of 1:54s from after the supersuits too.
Amazing…thanks!
as well as Phelps’ best (1:54.16) also from 2011 WC
Yes, Duncan Scott possibly. Swam an easy 1.55.90 at the GB Trials in April.
