The first day of the Miami (OH) Invite is in the books. Thursday night’s action featured the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay, women’s 3-meter diving and men’s 1-meter diving.

In the women’s 200 free relay, the hosting Miami Redhawks won with a 1:31.70. Nicole Maier (22.80), Taylor Connors (23.23), Honor Brodie-Foy (22.65), and Julia Waechter (23.02) teamed up to get the job done.

Nicole Maier went on to win the women’s 500 free in 4:43.44, leading a 1-2 charge by the Redhawks. Maier now leads the MAC this year with her time. Teammate Greta Kolbeck was second, swimming a 4:48.06, marking herself as the only other swimmer in the field under 4:50.

Miami also won the women’s 400 medley relay, where Madeline Padavic (54.24), Ashley Sego (1:03.07), Honor Brodie-Foy (53.71), and Maier (48.14) combined for a 3:39.16.

Ball State’s Payton Kelly took the women’s 50 free in 23.59 after swimming a 23.16 in prelims.

Grand Canyon’s Maria Brunlehner swam a 2:01.33 to win the women’s 200 IM, fueled by a huge 27.69 on the final 50 of the race.

Ball State kicked off the meet with a win in the men’s 200 free relay. Owen Chaye (19.91), Jack Wolfred (20.02), Jacob Siewers (20.16), Joey Garberick (20.12) teamed up for a 1:20.21. Grand Canyon came in third, but had a great anchor of 19.58 from Omar Elsayd.

Owen Chaye went on to win the men’s 50 free over Elsayd, touching in 20.05 to Elsayd’s 20.08. Chaye’s 19.91 on the relay lead-off stands as his season best.

Elsayd was also excellent on the men’s 400 medley relay, helping GCU to victory with a 43.77 on the anchor leg. Sam Jennings led off in 48.38, Jonathan Rom split 54.00 on breast, and Adrian Tejera was 46.86 on fly. GCU won the event in 3:13.01.

Miami’s Henju Duvenhage was great in the men’s 200 IM, swimming a 1:46.09 to win by 2.5 seconds. He swam a well-balanced race, splitting 22.86 on fly, 26.42 on back, 31.02 on breast, and 25.79 on free.

Grand Canyon also grabbed a win in the men’s 500 free, where Vitaly Kostin clocked a 4:22.47. Kostin was out quick, splitting 2:08.22 on the first 250 yards, which is 4:16 pace.

  • Women’s 3-meter: Sydney Rice (MIAMI) – 299,50
  • Men’s 1-meter: Isaac Poole (Grand Canyon) – 307.55
