Mexican swimmer Ramiro Ramirez Juarez has been awarded a retroactive 6-month suspension that will see him return to competition later this month, FINA announced today.
The suspension was back-dated to May 30th, 2014, when his provisional suspension began. That’s three weeks after the May 5th positive test for the banned substance Methylhexaneamine at the Olimpiada Nacional, Mexico’s National Championship meet.
At that meet, Ramirez was 2nd in the men’s 100 fly in 55.65 and won the 200 fly in 2:01.73. That 200 fly came on the day of his positive test.
Methylhexaneamine is a stimulant that was originally developed as a nasal decongestant, but has since been banned around the world after at least 5 deaths were associated with Methylhexaneamine-based exercise supplements.
Stateside, Ramirez finished 7th at the 2014 Austin Grand Prix in the 200 fly in January.
