In the women’s 100m breaststroke prelims of the 2019 Pan American Games, we already saw 1 national record go down in the form of Julia Sebastian’s 2nd seeded time of 1:06.98. That checks in as a new Argentine and South American Record for the 25-year-old.
Further down the top 8, however, is Mercedes Toledo, who also nabbed a new National Record for her country of Venezuela.
Entering these Pan American Games, Toledo’s personal best and national standard rested at the 1:10.40 she notched 3 years ago at the Mare Nostrum Tour stop in Barcelona. This morning, however, splitting 33.01/36.73, the 30-year-old got under the 1:10 threshold for the very first time in a heats result of 1:09.74. That positions the veteran as 7th seed heading into tonight’s final, representing the sole Venezuelan.
Toledo also owns the 50m ad 200m breaststroke records for her nation and will be contesting both races here in Lima, Peru.
