Medals Galore for Warrender on Day 4 of #SNAGS14

The following is an unedited press release courtesy of Scottish Swimming:

On the penultimate day of competition at the Scottish Gas National Age Group Championships at the Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen, Warrender Baths Club enjoyed a fantastic night of swimming securing a dozen more medals to add to their already impressive haul.

There were back to back wins for the club in the 100m breaststroke finals. First up was 13 year old Archie Goodburn, who powered to victory in a time of 1:13.56, a full second ahead of nearest rival Thomas Balfour (North Lanarkshire) who finished with silver in 1:14.56. Greig Rowe of Carnegie won bronze in 1:15.07.

Speaking after the race Goodburn said,

“That was tough. I had a really bad tempo in the heats so had to fix that. Ryan (Retson) had a really good turn but with long, powerful strokes I had a good 2nd 50m.”

Another victory for Warrender came in the next race where George Clough added to his medal haul, winning gold in the 14 years 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:10.33.

After the race George described the atmosphere at the event,

“That hurt a lot as I’ve been doing multiple events each day, but the atmosphere was brilliant and really helped in the last 50m.”

Lucy Hope (BEST) took away two silver medals, the first of which came in a hard fought 200m freestyle final, which was won by Hannah Miley (Garioch). Hope battled with fellow Team Scotland team-mate Rachel Masson for silver, and in the end nothing could split the girls, they both finished in a time of 2:03.73.

Hope’s next medal came in the 100m backstroke final where Carnegie’s Kirsty Simpson stormed out of the blocks and held onto the lead, winning in 1:03.14, a new Scottish Age Group Record (18 years). Hope’s silver medal came in 1:03.91, while Chelsea Lawson of Carnegie won bronze in 1:04.79.

After the race Hope said,

“I was away at Mare Nostrum last week and preparation for the Games is going well. It’s all about fine-tuning now.”

After tonight’s finals, FIRST’s Ryan Retson now has 6 National Age Group Titles to his name. Victory in 200m butterfly was convincing in 2:17.90, over half a second ahead of Iain Fletcher (Milngavie & Bearsden) who won silver in 2:18.43. Tom Robinson of Ulverston secured bronze in 2:23.52.
