Now three days in to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, the host nation has started to put some distance between itself and the competition in the pool. China picked up a pair of gold medals on night 3 to double its total, and now leads in overall medals with 7. Those golds came courtesy of new Junior World Record-holder Shen Duo in the 100 free and Li Zhuhao in a close 100 fly win.
Italy had itself a great night, rocketing to 5 total medals and winning two golds of its own. The Italians have now matched China with four golds and one silver, with the host nation holding two more bronzes after day 3. Italy’s Simona Quadrella topped the girls 800 free, while Ambra Esposito rode a big back-half to tie for the girls 200 back gold.
The battle between those two nations should be interesting tomorrow, as China is set up to get a medal from sprinter Yu Hexin, while Italy holds the top 50 back seed with 100 back co-champ Simone Sabbioni.
Hungary still sits third, but didn’t medal at all on day 3. The Americans closed the gap slightly, getting their second gold from 200 back co-champ Hannah Moore.
The medals have continued to spread out based on the slim, 8-person roster limits. 20 different nations have now medaled in just 15 events. Spain and the Bahamas added their first medals of the competition on night 3.
Note: the totals for golds, silvers and bronzes are thrown off. That’s because we’ve had not one, but two ties for gold medals thus far. That gives us 17 golds and just 13 silvers in 15 events.

I didnt check the whole medal table, but at least germanys count is wrong:
Silver: Julia willers (50 breast), max pilger (100 breast), bronze: damian wierling (200 free), mens 4×100 relay. So it should be 0/2/2.
You’re correct – the boys 100 breast got inadvertantly left out of our tallies. It’s been included now, which adds medals to Russia, Germany and Venezuela.
