Men’s Recap

O’FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University men’s swimming and diving team opened the home portion of its dual meet schedule here Friday afternoon as the fourth-ranked Bearcats improved to 5-0 on the season in dual meets following its wins Friday over Saint Louis University (209-80) and fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Truman State (222-62) at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.

In Friday’s double dual meet, the Bearcats won 15 of the 16 events, including winning the 400 medley relay for the second straight meet and the Bearcat men also turned in two ‘B’ qualifying times and one automatic qualification in diving thanks to senior Ethan Larson (Anchorage, Alaska/Paidaie Cooperative School) winning the 3-meter diving event with 299.70 points, which was good for NCAA qualification.

The Bearcats won 15 of 16 events against both teams as the only event McKendree didn’t win was the 400 freestyle relay as Saint Louis went first, third, fourth and fifth, while Truman went second and sixth.

Three Bearcats won at three events on Friday, including sophomore Filipe Pinheiro (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio Ao Cubo) taking home four event wins.

Pinheiro was the second leg on the winning 400 medley relay team that recorded a time of 3:18.37 and was first in the 100 breaststroke (56.25), 200 breaststroke (2:02.31) and 200 IM (1:55.01).

Along with Pinheiro, graduate student Xander Skinner (Namibia, Africa/Windhoek Afrikaans Private School) won three events, while junior DaVante Carey (Nassau, Bahamas/Queens College), freshman Filip Cigic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazija), Larson and freshman Alireza Yavari (Isfahan, Iran/Shayestegan) each won two events.

Skinner, who was named this week’s PNC GLVC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, took home first place in both the 50 freestyle (20.56) and 100 freestyle (45.17) and was the anchor leg on the winning 400 medley relay team that recorded a time of 3:18.37. Both of Skinner’s times in the 50 and 100 freestyle for NCAA ‘B’ qualifying times.

Carey was the first leg on the winning 400 medley relay team and was first in the 100 backstroke (50.11), while Cignic placed first in 1,000 freestyle (9:42.24) and 500 freestyle (4:41.05)  and Yavari was first in the 200 freestyle (1:41.06) and 100 butterfly (50.21).

Larson also won both diving events as he placed first in the 1-meter (263.78) and 3-meter boards (299.70). Senior Kenneth Glidden (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/Triple C School) was third and second in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards.

The other Bearcats to win events were freshman Jackson Lustig (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) as he won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:51.00, while freshman Patryk Rozenek (Radlin, Poland/Zsoms Raciborz) was first in the 200 backstroke (1:53.31) and senior Gregg Lichinsky (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) was the third leg on the 400 medley relay.

McKendree also finished first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200 freestyle, went first through four in both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle and was first through third in the 500 freestyle. The Bearcats also claimed the top two finishes in the 400 medley relay, the 3-meter diving and 100 butterfly.

The Bearcats continue its homestand with another double dual meet on Saturday, Oct. 23 as they host 14th ranked Delta State and 15th-ranked Missouri S&T beginning at 11 a.m.

Women’s Recap

O’FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University Women’s Swimming and Diving Team opened up its home dual meet schedule at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Friday afternoon by picking up an impressive 165-119 win over 20th-ranked Truman State and falling 155-138 to Division I Saint Louis University. The 17 point margin against SLU was the closest ever for the Bearcats against the Billikins.

McKendree, who is ranked 24th in the preseason CSCAA Coaches Poll, won six of the 16 events held on Friday, including sweeping placing first and second overall in both the 1 and 3-meter diving competition.

The big winner on Friday was freshman Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) as she recorded three event wins as she took home first place in the 50 freestyle (24.04) and the 100 freestyle with a ‘B’ qualifying time of 52.09 and was the lead leg on McKendree’s winning 400 freestyle relay that swam a time of 3:33.68.

In addition to Sonnenberg’s three event wins, sophomore Regan Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) and junior Andrea Menard-Cordoba (Montreal, Quebec/College of St. Ann) went 1-2 in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. In the 1-meter diving event, Gubera posted a score of 242.54 to finish first, while Menard-Cordoba was second with a score of 190.88, while in the 3-meter diving event, Gubera was first with a score of 251.02 and Menard-Cordoba tallied 200.55 to place second.

Graduate student Molly Smalley (Windhoek, Namibia/Plymouth College) earned her first-ever individual event win as a Bearcat as she posted a time of 2:11.55 to win the 200 IM.

McKendree’s other event win on Friday came in the final event as they took home first place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.68. The members of the winning relay team were Sonnenberg, senior Haley Rey (Columbia, Ill./Columbia), freshman Sarah Gromley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) and freshman Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emila, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal).

In Friday’s other relay event, the Bearcats just missed a first place finish as they posted a time of 3:58.35 to finish second in the 400 medley relay. SLU won the race in a time of 3:57.13. The members of the medley relay team were freshman Caitlyn Sligh (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial), junior Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township), Abbruscato and Sonnenberg.

The Bearcats will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 23 as they host 16th-ranked Delta State in a dual meet beginning at 11 a.m. The Bearcat men will host both Detla State and Missouri S&T on Saturday.

O’FALLON, Ill. – The Saint Louis women’s swimming and diving team defeated both opponents while the SLU men’s squad went 1-1 in a double dual meet with McKendree and Truman State Friday afternoon.

The Billiken women topped McKendree 155-138 and Truman State 193-87. The Billiken men downed Truman State 205-66 and fell to McKendree 209-80.

Bri Hodgkins and Emily Leonard led the women’s team with two victories apiece. Hodgkins won the 100 fly (58.04) and 200 fly (2:08.05), while Leonard captured the 500 free (5:08.56) and 1000 free (10:32.35).

Also winning events for the SLU women were Natalie Daniel in the 200 free (1:55.55), Tessa Horan in the 200 back (2:08.79) and Emily Smith in the 100 back (58.46).

The men’s team recorded a victory in the 400 free relay. Joe FederWyatt JohnsonJanssen Gamilla and Nick Soltys clocked a winning time of 3:10.20.

Runner-up finishes were turned in by Janssen Gamilla in the 200 fly (1:53.44), Ethan Hoak in the 200 back (1:58.51) and Jeddrick Gamilla in the 200 breast (2:11.06).

The Billikens return to action Saturday, Nov. 6, in a double dual vs. Evansville and Little Rock in Evansville, Ind.

O’FALLON, Ill.—The Truman Swimming Teams took on Division I Saint Louis University and GLVC rival McKendree in a tri-meet Friday afternoon, and the Bulldogs fell to both the Billikens and Bearcats. The women fell to McKendree 165-119 and Saint Louis 193-87; while the men fell to SLU 205-66 and McKendree 222-62. For full results, click here.

The Bulldogs took first in the 400 medley relay as Emma BrabhamEmily TraubeHolly Olson and Meg Herevoh finished with a finals time of 3:57.13; more than a second ahead of the second place team. In the 200 freestyle, Herevoh placed third with a finals time of 1:57.58—just .29 over her seed time. Later in the 500 freestyle, she also beat her seed time by over four seconds as she finished second with a finals time of 5:11.97. Lexi Poe finished fourth and Kylie Strobl finished fifth in the 200 free—but Strobl beat her seed time of 1:59.78 with a finals time of 1:58.74. Strobl also beat her seed time in the 200 backstroke, where she finished with a finals time of 2:11.8. Brabham finished second in the 100 backstroke with a finals time of 58.69, and she also won the 200 breaststroke with a finals time of 2:27.78. Traube won the 100 breaststroke with a finals time of 1:07.63—beating her seed time of 1:08.33. Traube also finished third in the 100 freestyle with a finals time of 53.52.

Mile McIntyre had a great swim in the 100 breaststroke, finishing sixth overall but beating his seed time by over three seconds with a finals time of 1:00.56. A.J. Kohler finished fourth in the 200 butterfly with a finals time of 1:56.83, beating his seed time by almost four seconds. In the 100 freestyle Jacob Pocivasek squeezed just under his seed time of 47.91 with a finals time of 47.89—placing sixth overall. Gavin Bergmann also beat his seed time with finals time of 49.71—placing ninth overall. Alex Burkhardt also beat his seed time of 51.89 by .6 seconds with a finals time of 51.29.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Friday as they take on Saint Ambrose in Kirksville.
