Matt Stasiunas Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

The Big Ten honored Penn State’s Matt Stasiunas as its swimmer of the week. Stasiunas swam to 3 wins at the Penn State Invite: The 1,650-yard freestyle (15:29.15), 200-yard freestyle (1:39.94) and 500-yard freestyle (4:28.78). His teammate Hector Garcia also garnered recognition as the Big Ten freshman of the week.

Swimmer of the Week

Matt Stasiunas, Penn State

Jr. – Avondale, Pa. – Salesianum

  • Collected a trio of first-place touches, and added a pair of second-place finishes in the Penn State Invite, leading the Nittany Lions to wins over Princeton and UConn
  • Finished first in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:29.15), 200-yard freestyle (1:39.94) and 500-yard freestyle (4:28.78)
  • Time in the 1,650-yard freestyle is an NCAA provisional qualifying time, and currently ranks fifth in the nation
  • Finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:03.42) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.11)
  • Earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor
  • Last Penn State Swimmer of the Week: Shane Ryan (Feb. 10, 2015)

Diver of the Week

Colin Zeng, Ohio State

So. – Fujian, China

  • Recorded four first-place finishes and tallied two second-place finishes in the springboard diving events against Cleveland State, Miami and Eastern Michigan
  • Finished first in all three-meter competitions, scoring 450.75, 430.50 and 406.80 points
  • Captured first place in the one-meter event against Eastern Michigan with 366.83 points, while finishing second against Cleveland State (361.65) and Miami (387.83)
  • Posted NCAA Zone qualifying marks in all events
  • Earns his first career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Ohio State Diver of the Week: Stephen Ettienne (Feb. 10, 2015)

Freshman of the Week
Hector Garcia Boissier, Penn State

Fr. – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain – IES Politecnico Las Palmas

  • Swept the one- and three-meter diving events at the Penn State Invite
  • Posted season best scores of 353.80 on the one meter and 377.25 on the three meter, recording NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns his second Freshman of the Week honor
