South African swimmer Matt Sates, who was set to swim in heat 3 of the men’s 400 free, no-showed the race in prelims. Sates was seeded 22nd out of 43 swimmers with a time of 3:49.37.
This no-show was likely to avoid a double session with the 400 IM, which Sates is also entered in. He is seeded 24th in that race with an entry time of 4:18.93. In prelims, the men’s 400 free and 400 IM are seperated by the heats of the women’s 100 fly, men’s 50 fly, women’s 400 free, and men’s 100 breast. Had he qualified for the finals in both events, he would have had to face a similar double there as well.
Prior to the meet, Sates told SwimSwam that he fell ill at a pre-worlds training camp. He said that he was recovering from an upper respiratory infection. However, he claimed that it wouldn’t negative impact his performance at Worlds. However, his teammate Pieter Coetze had to withdraw from the meet due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
Sates is also set to swim in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM later in the meet. He is seeded highest in the 200 IM, having the 14th-fastest time of the field (1:57.60).
At the South African Championships this year in April, Sates won the 400 free in a time of 3:49.37, which was a new personal best time for him.
