Matt Fallon took the win in the 200 breast at the San Antonio Pro Swim, touching just ahead of Leon Marchand in 2:08.18. Fallon, known for the back half of his race, is working toward being able consistently to go out faster while still maintaining his finishing speed. He has put in a lot more long course work this season and as part of his season plan, tapered more for the Ivy League Championships than he did for NCAAs.

I mean, it’s not like Marchand swam 2:06 or even 2:07
Super elite breastrokers regularly swim 2:08 in season (ZSC, Qin Haiyang, Japanese swimmers). And Fallon being a World Championship bronze medalist should be able to swim 2:08 in season if he wants to medal in Paris.
Marchands breastroke is pretty pedestrian in-season and Fallon is a pretty good swimmer who is only like a second behind Marchand in the event making an upset possible

Marchand’s super power is off-the-walls / underwater. Fallon’s super-strength is endurance. So, in season LCM favors Fallon a bit. Even the smallest deviation from an ideal pace for either of them makes the other one a favorite. Fallon won this one, swimming a race more to his liking (preferred pace). On to the next one.

Either that or he doesn’t know himself well enough. He swam all season bests and a PB at NC’s, it was clearly a better meet than Ivy’s for him
