Maryland Breaststroker Tenpas Gives Commitment to Duke

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Will Tenpas, a senior breaststroker from Chevey Chase, Maryland, has given his verbal commitment for the 2019 recruiting class to Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He is a Junior Nationals qualifier in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, but swims stronger in the 200 in both short course and long course. He currently swims club for the Nation’s Capital Swim Club of the Potomac Valley LSC. He also earned the distinguished USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honor last year.

Tenpas has seen great success in the breaststroke his entire career. He has seen consistent improvement in both distances for the past six consecutive season vaulting him into becoming one of the top breaststrokers in the nation. At last month’s NCSA Junior National Championships in Orlando, Florida, he earned a spot in the consolation finals with a career-best 2:02.39 in the prelims. Representing Chevy Chase HS, he was a state finalist in both the 100 breast and 200 IM events each of the past two seasons helping lead them to a men’s team runner-up finish in the Maryland Class 3A/4A State Championships. He will join Freshman Maddy Pfaff (diver) as the second Chevy Chase HS graduate on the Duke roster in 2019.

Best Times (SCY):

  • 500 Freestyle: 4:43.55
  • 1000 Freestyle: 9:48.57
  • 1650 Freestyle: 16:35.52
  • 100 Breaststroke: 57.32
  • 200 Breaststroke: 2:02.39
  • 200 IM: 1:56.94
  • 400 IM: 4:03.46

Tenpas finds himself on the outside looking in as he lands into the competitive ACC. In the 200 breast, his best event, it appears likely he will have to break the two minute threshold to provide scoring chances for the Blue Devils, who finished in 6th place on the men’s side. Things get more difficult in the 100 breast where he will need a three-second cut to manage the bonus consolations heat at conference.

Tenpas will have multiple underclassmen training partners with Duke, though, in freshmen Cole Reznick Colson Zucker and sophomore Adam Zimmer who are all hovering right around the 2:00 barrier. With the graduation of All-ACC breaststroker Judd Howard, Duke will have a brewing battle for their breaststroke leg for the next few years.
