WOMEN’S RECAP

USC sophomore Marlene Kahler was a huge contributor for the Trojans, winning all three of her individual events. Kahler kicked things off with a dominant win in the 1000 free, swimming a 10:02.03. Having only the single heat of the men’s 1000 free as a break, Kahler then won the 200 free decisively, clocking a 1:49.74. She took the race over on the middle 100, splitting 27.71 on the second 50 and 28.30 on the third.

Kahler went on to win the 500 free in 4:54.57, winning the race by nearly ten seconds. She even-split the race, going 2:27.17 on the first 250, then coming home in 2:27.40.

The Trojans were dominant in the breaststroke events, led by Kaitlyn Dobler. In the 100 breast, Dobler swam a 1:00.35, getting out to a 28.44 on the first 50, then swimming a 31.91 coming home. It was a 1-2-3 finish for USC, with Isabelle Odgers taking second in 1:01.99, followed by Nisha Kijkanakorn with a 1:03.11 for third.

The 200 breast was a similar story, seeing Dobler win the race in 2:10.76. She held her pace well, splitting 30.13, 33.80, 33.57, and 33.26 respectively on each 50. Odgers was again second, posting a 2:11.16. This time, USC freshman Katherine Adams took third, swimming a 2:18.39.

USC’s Hanna Henderson swept the backstroke events. She won the 100 back in 54.98, clocking the fastest split in the field on both 50s. Notably, USC grad student Aria Bernal, who competed for Arizona as an undergrad, came in second with a 55.69. Henderson then went on to win the 200 back in 1:59.71.

Trojan Elise Garcia, a grad student who swam for Cal as an undergrad, swept the sprint free events. In the 50 free, Garcia swam a 22.94, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 23 seconds. Garcia then went on to win the 100 free in 49.52, going 24.49 on the first 50, then roaring home with a 25.03 on the second 50.

USC’s Anicka Delgado took second in both the 50 and 100 free. She clocked a 23.03 in the 50 free and 49.74 in the 100 free.

Notably, Henderson (25.40), Dobler (27.40), Delgado (23.73), and Garcia (22.01) teamed up to win the 200 medley decisively, swimming a 1:38.54.

The Trojans would finish first in the 200 free relay as well but swam exhibition (not for points). Garcia (23.25), Dobler (22.17), Delgado (22.43), and Henderson (22.60) combined for a 1:30.45. Arizona officially won the race in 1:30.63, with Paige Armstrong (23.28), Kennedy Fisher (22.35), Julia Heimstead (22.56), and Alyssa Schwengel (22.44) teaming up to get it done.

Arizona’s Julia Heimstead won the 200 IM, though she wasn’t the fastest swimmer in the field. Heimstead swam a 2:03.94, while USC’S Justina Kozan clocked a 2:00.90 but swam exhibition.

Kozan won the 200 fly in 1:58.87, beating Heimstead, who finished second in 2:00.79. Kozan led Heimstead 57.18 to 57.19 at the 100 mark, then pulled away on the third 50, splitting 1.2 seconds faster than Heimstead.

Arizona’s Maddy Burt won the 100 fly decisively, posting a 53.27. She was excellent on the second 50 of the race, splitting 27.73.
