Reigning two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Swimmer Meredith Wurtz has joined the Marist swimming and diving coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. She will be on the pool deck as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s squads.
Wurtz currently holds Marist women’s swimming and diving records in five events: two individual and three relay. She set all of them during her senior season in 2016-17. A staple in Marist’s strong freestyle core, she won a MAAC Championship all four years of her collegiate career and shattered the fastest times in program history in the 50- (23.48 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (51.20 seconds).
At the 2017 MAAC Championships Wurtz took gold medals in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and placed second at 200 yards before earning the conference’s Women’s Co-Outstanding Swimmer award. One year earlier she anchored Marist’s record setting 800-yard freestyle (7:29.41) and 400-yard medley relay squads (3:47.35) on her way to earning MAAC Most Outstanding Swimmer. In her collegiate career she won 15 gold medals at the MAAC Championships and was a four-time ECAC finalist in freestyle events, placing as high as fourth in the 100-yard event in 2017. She earned MAAC Swimmer of the Week recognition eight times.
Wurtz also saw success in the classroom, as she was selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team three years in a row. She graduated from Marist with a bachelor’s degree in psychology/special education in 2017.
