Italian backstroke star Margherita Panziera blew away the Italian Record in the women’s 100 back tonight with a 56.57 at the first finals session of the SC European Championships. Panziera already holds the 200 back national record at 2:01.56, which she will be racing later in the meet. With her swim in the semifinal tonight, Panziera took .78 seconds off the Italian Record of 57.35, which had stood since 2008. Elena Gemo held the record from 2008, and was a 2012 Olympian for Italy, as well as a multi-time medlaist at SC Euros, Mediterranean Games, and World University Games over the course of her career.
Panziera, who is more primarily a 200 backstroker, took her race out relatively modestly, flipping at 27.79 on the first 50. Her first 50 split was 6th fastest in the field, however she came home in 28.78, which was the 2nd fastest split of the 16 semifinalists. She’ll get another shot at breaking the record again tomorrow night, where it looks like she’ll be locked in a tight battle behind Kira Toussaint.
