Magnussen Pulls Out of Canberra With Shoulder Injury; Worlds in Question

Unfortunate news for James Magnussen fans, as The Australian is reporting that the 100m freestyle world champion is withdrawing from the Australian Grand Prix in Canberra due to a shoulder injury.

After notably not swimming in the 100m freestyle final, Magnussen “admitted he had been nursing a shoulder injury since February and been diagnosed with a tear in the sub-scapular muscle”, the publication reports.  The 24-year old received a series of joint injections after the 2015 Australian Nationals last month, but has since had the pain recur in Canberra, putting his presence at Worlds in Kazan in doubt.

Magnussen was set to appear in the Canet and Monte Carlo stops of the Mare Nostrum series, but his participation in those meets is now subject to medical specialists’ recommendations.  Thus far in Canberra, Magnussen had finished 6th and 4th in the uniquely-formatted meet’s men’s 2 x 50m freestyle races, touching in 23.20 and 23.81, respectively.

That’s a real pity. I guess that we will have to wait another year for the re-appearance of the Aussie Mean Machine.

Yikes! I hope he gets better soon just for the spirit of competition or what not even though he is in my top 5 least favorite athletes on the planet.
