Magnolia, Texas (08/31/16) ─ It is a season to remember for Joy Field and Lucie Nordmann, who just returned from the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui, HI with two meet records and a combined five medals.
The Junior Pan Pacific Championships, held at Maui’s Kihei Aquatic Center, Aug. 24 to 27, featured the top junior swimmers from Australia, Bahamas, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States.
Field, 17, won gold in the 1500-meter freestyle last Saturday, besting her silver performance earlier in the week in the 800-meter freestyle. Nordmann, 16, took silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events and earned a gold medal with a meet record as the lead-off, backstroke leg for the U.S. in the 400-meter medley relay. Nordmann also set an individual meet record in the 200-meter backstroke during the preliminaries.
Terry Jones, MAC Head Coach, had a front-row seat to these outstanding performances, as he made the trip as an Assistant Coach for Team U.S.A., which won the team competition.
“The experience Joy and Lucie had was priceless,” said Jones. “I know they gained a much broader perspective of swimming and are motivated more than ever before to continue to grow and improve as swimmers.”
On a personal note, Jones, who was appointed to the team by USA Swimming in July, said it was an honor to be a part of a great coaching staff and to work with some of the top 18&U athletes in the country, while they represented the U.S. in international competition.
“Many of the 2016 Olympic athletes participated in the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Games,” he said. “It is a stepping stone for them, and I am sure we will see many of these athletes go on to represent the U.S.A. in 2020.”
Eight National Titles for Field and Nordmann in 2016
Field, who is a senior at Magnolia High School, and Nordmann, who is a junior at The Woodlands High School, had an excellent season.
It started in March with two national titles each at the 2016 National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Junior Championships in Orlando, Fla. Field won the 800-meter and 1650-yard freestyle events. Nordmann took the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events. Also in Florida, Field won the U.S. 18-Under Open Water National Championships in the 5K event in April.
In early August at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Minneapolis, MN, Nordmann took home the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke titles, and Field won the 1500-meter freestyle race.
