Maggie MacNeil Gunning for Sub-50 100 FL/BK at 2019 NCAAs

Canadian-native freshman standout Maggie MacNeil of Michigan has confirmed her place at the 2019 Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

MacNeil has pulled together an impressive freshman year, becoming the fourth fastest 100 flyer all-time after swimming in a 25-yard pool for less than a month. She will accompany her 49.59 100 fly (#2 seed) with her 50.50 100 back (#3 seed) on day 3 of the NCAAs later this March. Considering her momentum with adjusting to SCY, MacNeil could potentially become the first woman to break 50 seconds in both the 100 fly and 100 back. That barrier will happen soon enough, but MacNeil looks like she’s got the best chance at getting to the wire first at this year’s NCAA Championship meet.

Along with her day 3 double-header, MacNeil will also swim the 50 free, where her 21.65 seed is ranked seventh on the psychs. MacNeil could also add along 4 relays, as she is a member of both medley relays and sprint free relays (excluding the 800 free relay) that are all ranked in the top 8 on the psychs.

MacNeil’s Big Ten line-up will almost be identical to her NCAA event line-up, with her busiest day being her 100 fly/100 back double and a sprint relay (free at Big Tens, medley at NCAAs). However, since only the 800 free relay is on Wednesday, MacNeil will likely double up on relays on Thursday with the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay along with her individual 50 free. With only the 400 free relay remaining on Saturday, and assuming she will swim the prelim relays, MacNeil is looking at 6/6/2 swims each day for a total of 14 swims (six 50s, eight 100s).

Yeah she was 49.7 I think at big tens on fly in the relay. I think fresher and fully rested she’d be well under 50
