Madison Wright Verbally Commits to the USC Trojans

Madison Wright from the Kingfish Aquatic Club of Waterford, Michigan has verbally committed to the USC Trojans.

Wright is primarily a middle-distance freestyler and a butterflier.

Her best times in yards:

  • 200 free – 1:47.61
  • 500 free – 4:46.75
  • 100 fly – 53.14
  • 200 fly – 1:55.30

Wright is a member of the 2014-2015 USA Swimming Junior National team with the 5th-best time from the relevant qualifying meets in the 200 meter fly – her best event. She swam a 2:11.34 at  a Sectional Championship meet in Indiana to earn that spot.

If ever there were a “200 fly” program in the NCAA, USC could make a claim to that honor. Between Katinka Hosszu and Jasmine Tosky, they’ve had one of the top-7 ranked 200 butterfliers in the NCAA for each of the last 6 seasons.

Wright will look to continue that tradition, as her best time already would’ve been 15th-best in the NCAA last year. After a little bit of a plateau in the event during her freshman year of high school (she was already under two minutes as a 13-year old in the 200 yard fly), Wright has been back-on-track, going best times for two straight seasons. That includes dropping almost four seconds as a sophomore, and a few tenths more as a junior.

Her junior year saw a full-second drop in the 100 fly as well, to really improve her recruiting stock by making her a medley relay option. By the time her sophomore year at USC rolls around, with Tosky and Kendyla Stewart both graduated by then, the fly spot seems like it will be Wright’s for the taking.

Last year Emily Kopas who signed with Michigan had a direct legacy, her father, Bil Kopas, who swam at Mich & would have been influential in her going there.

Why do you think, last year , they signed a bunch of high ranking recruits and this year, no one wants to commit there. What’s going on with the women’s program ??

GoBlueNo1Fan, I think you should give careful consideration to your posts before you hit the “post comment” button. While there is nothing wrong with voicing your opinion regarding the current state of the USC swim program, I would ask that you refrain from posting such a comment in direct response to a swimmer’s announcement that they have committed to USC. Each of these swimmers have worked very hard to get to this moment and are proud of their accomplishments. I congratulate Ms. Wright on her decision to swim at USC and know she will be a positive addition to their program!
