Madison Kennedy Went 24.8 Without Warm Up/Warm Down (Video)

Reported by Nick Pecoraro.

2018 U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

WOMEN’S 50 FREE FINALS

  • 2020 Olympic Trials Cut: 25.99
  1. Simone Manuel, ALTO, 24.39
  2. Madison Kennedy, MAC, 24.87
  3. Anna Hopkin, UARK, 24.93

Despite a slow start, Simone Manuel built up a lead going into the last 25 meters of the race to win with a 24.39. Her time is only two-tenths off her fastest swim of 2018, which was at the 2018 Pan Pacs (24.22). Taking second was SwimMAC veteran Madison Kennedy in a 24.87. Of note, Kennedy did not warm up or down before/after her race in prelims or finals. She only swam 2 laps (100 meters) all day, her prelims and finals swims.

Anna Hopkin just edged out national-team member Margo Geer to take third on the podium with a 24.93. Geer finished in fourth by five one-hundredths with a 24.97.

In the B-Final, Linnea Mack won the final with a 25.69. Olivia Bray took the C-final with a 26.02.

USA swimming needs to come up with a dress/appearance code. Piercings, color hair, and tattoos are low class. Our athletes don’t want to be in the same category as skateboarders.

This is satire, right? 😂

Wonder what the most-downvoted comment in SwimSwam history is…

“Eye patches and parrots on shoulders are low-class, matey”

Sooooo, it’s okay for all the MALE swimmers to have full sleeves and chest and back pieces but if a FEMALE has a tatt or piercing, it’s wrong?
Which cave have you been hiding in all these years?

It’s not about male swimmers having tattoos, piercings, and color hair versus female swimmers with tatt, piercings, and color hair it’s about all the swimming athlete looking professional and sharp because anyone can be labeled low class if you have tattoos, piercings and color hair. Take a look at professional golfer, professional tennis players, professional polo players. Everyone takes those athletes serious because they dress and look professional.

Yes, Braden, he said professional polo players. With the horse and the ball and the club and the Ralph Lauren logo. You know, those athletes that we all take so seriously?

Don’t even get me started about how seriously I take golfers.

I’ve been to a match at Newport Polo in Rhode Island, which is a polo mecca (it’s a good time, if you’e never been). Didn’t seem like anybody was taking it all that seriously…

Swimming isn’t a country-club sport anymore. Deal with it.

I want more Madison Kennedy. Sure, age group coaches will hide this clip far far away from their kids, but at least it was interesting and fun.

No need to hide this from age group coaches. Swimmers and coaches alike should encourage swimmers to be themselves.

Thanks for making sprinters look lazy. Maybe she could have won, or not been blown out by Simone if she did warm up/down. But by all means publicize this “stunt” or make it seem “ccol” to encourage younger swimmers to do the same thing.

Clearly you have misunderstood the purpose of her approach. As she stated she did a bunch of dryland warmup/pilates. She also said that she knows her body and it is nice for her to be able to use that to her advantage(note it is nothing she recommends nor does she in anyway say that other people should follow her example.) I’m glad you got to rant about someones success… all she did is something that felt comfortable for her. And hey, it worked.

Comments like this are what’s holding swimming back. Sure, this is a fun funny story, interesting for the fans, a change from the usual boring interviews…but someone whines “how will this affect the 10 & under swimmers?!?!?!”

2 Cents – why don’t you want pro swimmers to make money?

As someone who swam with her on her club team way back when I would say she is gifted and good luck to you trying to swim 24 seconds in 50m free….thats very fast and only a few handfuls of women have done it.

For some reason this reminded me of a British sprinter, Olympic silver medallist Shirley Strong. She used to smoke cigarettes during her warm up pre-race. When sport was an amateurs game!
