Indiana Last Chance Meet
- Bloomington, IN
- March 8, 2025
- SCY (25 Yards)
At Indiana’s last chance meet this morning, Luke Barr swam the 100 IM with teammate Finn Brooks. He finished in 45.74, which is the new fastest time ever in the men’s 100 IM.
With this swim, he overtakes Shaine Casas‘ 46.33 by more than half-a-second, and becomes the first person in history under 46 seconds in the event.
Updated Top 5 Performances:
- Luke Barr– 45.74 (2025)
- Shaine Casas– 46.33, (2020)
- Finn Brooks– 46.43, (2025)
- Leon Marchand– 46.63, (2022)
- Ilya Kharun– 46.91, (2024)
- Matt Grevers– 47.06, (2016)
Finn Brooks also found his way onto the list, swimming 46.43 to go the third fastest time in history, overtaking Leon Marchand‘s 46.63.
The 100 IM is not an NCAA event, but Barr is already a lock to attend the meet, thanks to his ‘A’ cut in the men’s 200 IM, where his 1:40.62 has him seeded 5th in the event. Brooks is also in with his 100 breast ‘A’ cut of 49.94 which is the 2nd fastest time in the country this season.

Other notable performances from this morning’s session included Northwestern’s Josh Staples swimming 4:13.2 in the men’s 500 freestyle which will earn him a qualification at 23rd in the event.
Gavin Wight from Indiana swam 45.30 in the 100 back, ranking him 30th in the event and putting him on the bubble for qualifications pending scratches.
Could someone explain to me why none of these D1 swimmers do a proper crossover
ASU participating in any last chance event?
Especially interested for Vergnes (he was #30 in the 100 Back before the Wight swim) and Cale Martter (he was 33 in 200 IM and 34 in 400 IM, pre scratches).
Tolu Young went 19.09 at SMU, haven’t seen Vergnes or Martter anywhere.
Thanks, Braden.
Neither records nor invite/qualifying times should be allowed via last chance meets nor time trials. I’ll forever die on that hill.
Why are you allergic to fun and fast swimming?
I never said to stop doing fun/fast exhibition swimming. I’m allergic to comparative times that aren’t in comparative situations.

I suspect, if I’ve read the IU Last Chance meet results correctly, it may give some explanation for Phil’s concerns.
If the events were actually swum in the order reflected in the results:
#3 500 Staples was 4:16.46
#9 200 Back Wight went for 100 split and was :45.30
#21 100 Back Wight was :45.55
#121 100 Back Wight was :45.90
#203 500 Staples: 4:13.28
#321 Another Men’s 100 Back; only one athlete, and Wight did not swim it.
#609 Final event of the meet was another Men’s 100 Back; Wight, :45.30.
Wight got a time for 4 100 Backstrokes (and even skipped one!!), including two at :45.30.

At the SMU Last Chance, Stanford’s Andres DuPont was similar to Wight; he swam the 100 Free FIVE times (2 of those out splits on a 200, only one as a real effort), finally breaking :42.00 on his last effort, touching at :41.72.
He was seeded into the meet at :41.95 from the ACCs, which I believe had him in a 4 way tie for 33rd, on the wrong side of the bubble. That 5th time he covered 100 yards freestyle moved him to well inside the bubble at 23rd.
Try writing a rule to implement this.
No rules 25 race would be cool.
That would just be 25 dolphin kick
with a one arm breastroke pullout at the finish
Isn’t a last chance meet for swimmers to try to qualify for the NCAA meet? What is a 100 I.M.doing in any such meet?
That’s its function, but it’s not uncommon for folks to swim anyway, especially when it’s a home meet.
Bro flubbed the cross over then fixed it by taking 2-3 dolphin kicks lol
Maximal age group nostalgia
Great swims by these two guys. Per Braden Keith’s recent article on last chance meets, what are we doing here? Two guys time trialing in an empty pool in an event that’s not even raced at NCAA championships. How do last chance meets build interest and growth in NCAA swimming, which is facing its greatest challenges in at least 40 years?
they’re having fun and swimming fast… 🤷♂️
i won’t complain about the growth of the sport
These two guys are already well into the meet.
They swam a 100 yard effort for fun. It went well, building confidence.
Beyond that, ever heard of fun?
GBR! If you know you know.
