The LSU diving team is set to start 2018 with the Tennessee Diving Invitational. The three-day invite will start on January 3 at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“This meet serves as a kick-start for us,” explained diving head coach Doug Shaffer. “This is the strongest and deepest level of competition we’ve faced yet. There will be seven SEC schools there, and it’ll be a great way to get us back in competition mode.”
The Tigers are coming off of a strong showing at the Auburn Diving Invite last month, where Lizzie Cui and Juan Celaya-Hernandez swept the springboard events. Celaya-Hernandez also set a school record in the men’s 3-meter finals with a score of 482.95.
For the men, Matt McClellan and Matthew Phillip set two season-high scores at Auburn, and will be looking to better those scores this week. McClellan hit season-best marks on both springboards while Phillip set season-highs on one-meter and platform. Freshman Dakota Hurbis also set a season-high score on three-meter.
Sophomore Makayla Robillard and junior Rileigh Knox also set season-high scores for the women’s squad. Robillard and Knox hit the marks on one-meter and Knox garnered a new personal-best of 314.50 on three-meter.
“We had some time off after Auburn, and we needed that both mentally and physically,” said Shaffer. “From here until March, we’re full speed ahead.”
