2023 Texas A&M Last Chance Meet

  • February 23-26, 2023
  • Texas A&M Student Rec Center Natatorium, College Station, Texas
  • Short Course Yards (50 yards), Prelims/Finals
  • Results on Meet Mobile: “Texas A&M Last Chance Meet 2023”

The first three sessions of the 2023 Texas A&M Last Chance Meet didn’t produce much of note, but on Friday evening there was a breakthrough in the only non-time-trial men’s race of the meet so far.

LSU junior Mitch Mason swam 52.05 in finals of the men’s 100 breaststroke, which is .02 seconds faster than his time done in an SEC time trial last week.

That might not seem like much, but it moves him into a tie for 30th in the NCAA with Indiana’s Jassen Yep this season.

Only two swimmers from Big Tens (Indiana’s Van Mathias and Josh Matheny) leapfrogged him on Friday night, which is accounted for in the tied-for-30th ranking. That means it could come down to the Pac-12 for Mason’s NCAA-qualification future (unless he pops off a big 200 later in the meet).

With between 28 and 32 swimmers usually chosen to go to NCAAs in each men’s event, that one spot for Mason could wind up proving big in a week-and-a-half when selections are announced.

Texas A&M, unlike most Last Chance meets, is using a full three-day meet format, so the event will continue on Saturday in College Station.
