Loyola Men Defeat Bucknell For First Time, Bison Women Top Greyhounds

BALTIMORE – Reid Hussey won three individual events, and Sung Lee contributed to three race wins as well to help Loyola University Maryland’s men’s swimming and diving program top Bucknell for the first time in program history on Saturday.

The Greyhound men defeated the Bison by a 187-108 final at the Mangione Pool to improve to 6-1 in duals overall this season. The women (4-3) added six event wins on the afternoon, but ultimately fell by a 171-129 margin.

Eight different individuals won races for the men in an all-around team effort, as the Greyhounds took first in 13 out of 16 contested events.

Loyola claimed the top three spots in seven of its 13 wins. Hussey led a group of four top finishers in the 200-yard individual medley, as his time of 1:54.42 was followed by Max Verheyen (1:56.27), Josh Walker (1:58.00) and Matt Voight (1:59.20).

In the 500 freestyle, it was Hussey (4:39.55), Dylan Champagne (4:44.31) and Nick Pacitti (4:45.77) claiming the top three finishes. Hussey’s other victory came in the 200 free, as he touched the line in 1:42.36. Champagne (1:43.35) added a third-place showing in that race.

Lee took first place individually in the 100 free (46.19) and the 100 butterfly (50.91). Jimmy Hayburn followed in third place in the 100 free (47.13), while Zac Metzler and Jared Copeland took second (51.35) and third (52.11), respectively, in the 100 fly.

Lee teamed with Conor RutiglianoJay Venit and Hayburn in the 200 medley relay (1:32.56) to begin the afternoon. Colin AndersonBrendon KolarJonathan Brooks and Hayburn concluded the meet with a first-place time of 3:07.49 in the 400 free relay.

David Sears topped a group of four Loyola finishers which led the pack in the 100 breaststroke. He touched the wall in 57.50, with John Sakovich (58.21) taking second, Venit (58.49) placing third and Luca Dicapua (59.53) finishing fourth.

Other 1-2-3 finishes for the Greyhounds came in the 200 fly, 200 backstroke and 200 breast.

Metzler (1:53.21) beat out Lee (1:53.26) and Copeland (1:54.30) in the 200 fly. Mark Boran (1:52.43) bested Brooks (1:53.93) and Casey Brown (1:55.08) in the 200 back, while the 200 breast consisted of Verheyen (2:07.32), Sakovich (2:08.48) and Sears (2:12.46) in the top three spots.

Rutigliano (51.34) out-touched Brooks (51.60) in the 100 back, while Pacitti (9:43.44) edged out Verheyen (9:44.81) in the 1000 free.

Jack Still led Loyola’s men’s divers with a second-place showing in the 3-meter (236.70 points). Hayburn (2nd, 20.99) and Anderson (3rd, 21.62) added strong efforts in the 50 free.

Megan DickeyEmily KoeglEmma Schouten and Devin Cronin posted race wins for the women, who also took first place in both relay events.

Dickey and Sophie Jahan claimed the top two spots in the 50 free, with Dickey (24.23) beating out Jahan (24.63) by four-tenths of a second. Koegl won the 100 fly with a time of 56.34, with Anne Hayburn (58.58) following in third place.

Cronin’s victory came in the 100 breast, as she completed the race in a time of 1:03.92. She added a third-place effort in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:20.22. Schouten finished that event in a winning time of 2:19.38.

For the relays, Elizabeth Walsh, Cronin, Hayburn and Dickey teamed up for a winning time of 1:45.42 in the 200 medley. In the 400 free relay, Jahan, Claire BowserAlden Coyne and Dickey finished in 3:35.50.

The Greyhound women added several additional runner-up performances in the pool. Walsh took second place in both the 200 IM (2:07.52) and 100 back (58.94). In the 200 fly, it was Koegl (2:04.98) in second and Molly Davis (2:09.70) in third.

Schouten added a second-place showing in the 200 free (1:54.97) and Dickey was second in the 100 free (52.42). Hayburn chipped in third-place efforts in the 100 back (1:00.26) and 100 fly (58.58).

Jessica Stolfi led the women in the diving events, posting a runner-up score in the 3-meter with 208.72 points.

Loyola is off next weekend before returning to the pool for its annual H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 6-7. Action on that Friday, Dec. 6, begins at 5 p.m.

BALTIMORE – The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team improved to 6-1 (5-1 Patriot League) on the young season with a 171-129 victory at Loyola on Saturday.

The Bison used 10 victories to continue their hot start, their second-straight 6-1 start to dual action. Emma Hadley (100 & 200 backstroke), Maddie Hartigan (100 & 200 freestyle) and Abby Merriman (500 & 1,000 freestyle) each won two events while Bucknell went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 1-meter dive.

Jamilie Atiyeh (1-meter) and Paige Schoelkopf (3-meter) combined to help the Bison claim both board crowns. Alexis Faria (200 butterfly) and Maggie Wyngowski (200 IM) accounted for Bucknell’s other event wins.

Catherine Craig’s time of 2:19.54 in the 200 breaststroke moved her into eighth in school history. She finished second against the Greyhounds.

The Bison improved to 3-0 all-time against the Greyhounds (4-3, 3-2 Patriot League). They next host the Bucknell Invitational on Dec. 6-8 at Kinney Natatorium. A select number of Bison will attend the U.S. Open from Dec. 5-7.
