Louisville’s Mitchell Whyte swam an impressive 22.83 in the ‘A’ final of the 50 freestyle, which would have been good for 2nd overall, had it not been completely underwater. Though Whyte was disqualified from the race, his time of 22.83 for a 50 LCM underwater dolphin kick is nonetheless impressive. You can watch Whyte’s swim in the video below. He is in lane 1 on the bottom of the screen. After diving in, he flips onto his back and kicks on his back for the entirety of the 50 meters.
why does the pool feel so short

Just my opinion but I think they should change rules and let u go underwater as much as u want in freestyle. Middle distance guys with good underwaters could do a 50-400 sweep
Was at the meet as a coach.
He also did it at prelims, but the officials didn’t catch it. Louisville swimmers said he wanted to go 22, so he was doing it again at finals. The Louisville contingent was quite amped up for it and it really looked like he was going to win. The pad didn’t fire right away, and he was pretty deep, so I think the time was the plunger and he missed the pad.
Miles Smachlo from UofM also did it during the B final.
He swam the entire prelim 50 underwater and the official didn’t catch it? That’s tremendous 😂😂😂

I thought in a “free” event you could do whatever you want. Why was he disqualified? Had he surfaced for a fraction of a second would it have been legal?
You can do whatever you want with a few caveats. Can’t pull on the lane rope, can’t push on the bottom, can’t go into other swimmers’ lanes…and can’t submerge past 15 meters off any wall.

How does this time stack up compared to all time best 50m underwater efforts? Has Lochte been faster?
