Lorenzo Mora stole the show on the opening day of the Nico Sapio Trophy in Genoa, setting a new Italian Record in the men’s 200 backstroke while also winning the 50 back.
Mora, 24, negative-split his way to a time of 1:48.72 in the 200 back, breaking his previous national record of 1:49.27 set at the 2021 Short Course World Championships where he finished fourth.
In that swim at SC Worlds, Mora used a similar strategy, leaning on his back-half speed, but was even more conservative on the first 100 in Genoa.

Mora now ranks second in the world this season, trailing only American Shaine Casas, who clocked 1:48.40 to win the Indianapolis stop of the FINA World Cup on Thursday. In the all-time rankings, Casas and Mora now rank 11th and 16th, respectively.

Prior to that performance, Mora also won the 50 back in a time of 23.30, moving up to ninth in the world this season. His best time stands at 22.90, also set at the 2021 SC Worlds.
OTHER MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Other highlights on the men’s side during Day 1 of the competition included new meet records for Matteo Ciampi, Simone Cerasuolo and Alberto Razzetti.
Ciampi won the 200 free in 1:43.06, cracking the meet record of 1:43.72 he set in 2019 while coming relatively close to his PB of 1:42.76, set at last year’s SC World Championships where he finished eighth.
Cerasuolo put up a time of 56.80 to win the 100 breast, dipping under Fabio Scozzoli‘s old meet record of 57.17 set in 2018. Federico Poggio was a close second in 57.35.
In the 200 IM, Razzetti touched in 1:54.26 to lower his 2019 meet record of 1:54.58. Razzetti was the bronze medalist in the 200 IM at the 2021 SC World Championships in what remains the Italian Record of 1:51.54.
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
The top performer on the women’s side was 20-year-old Costanza Cocconcelli, who doubled up with wins in the 100 free and 100 IM.
Cocconcelli first won the 100 free in 53.04, dipping under her personal best of 53.26 set at the 2021 European SC Championships. She then won the 100 IM in 59.07, breaking American Kathleen Baker‘s 2018 meet record of 59.74. Cocconcelli currently owns the Italian Record of 58.45, set in September 2021 during the International Swimming League (ISL) season.
