Little Rock Masters and Arkansas Masters LMSC hosted a one-day LCM meet at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Friday, January 20, and then a two-day SCM meet on Saturday and Sunday, January 21-22.
Lone Star Masters (LSM) members Janie Cole (70), Jeannie Woolslayer (70), Lynn Morrison (69) and Krissy Maccurday (71) celebrated their new 280 relay age group by shattering six world records by a combined 62 seconds – a staggering record-breaking margin averaging over 10 seconds per relay.

LSM swimmer Bruce Williams has several USMS All-American honors in his freestyle and backstroke events. He aged up to the 70-74 group in Little Rock and broke thru with his first WORLD record and followed that up with two more. On Friday, Bruce shaved .07 off Hugh Wilder’s 2017 LC 50 back record of 33.58 to 33.51 and the next day lowered Hugh’s SC record from a 33.09 to a 32.57. He also had just enough left in the tank to come back Sunday and tie Richard Abraham’s 2015 100 SC free record with a 1:01.70.
Little Rock Masters (LRM) Doug Martin, the current world record holder in the 65-69 age group for the 50 free in both courses, just moved into the 70-74 group and made attempts to cement those also. Racing in his home pool he lowered Richard Abraham’s 2015 world record in the LC 50 free from 27.71 to 27.12, and the next day, powered to a time of 26.89 in SC, just missing Abraham’s 26.88 record by .01.
Another swimmer to take advantage of his new age group was Bruce Kone (65), swimming unattached. He is the current 60-64 world record holder in SC 50 fly and now also owns the 65-69 record, lowering Doug Martin’s 28.65 to 28.58.
There were also three new National Records at the meet. Joanne Menard from Mesa Aquatic Club took advantage of her new 75 age group swimming a 25:25.42 in the 1500 free, edging out the three-month-old mark of 25:26.12 swum by Ruth Shaps. Dave Noble from MOVY was stroking fast through both the 100 and 200 SCM breast in the 80-84 age group, setting new records of 1:36.56 and 3:33.07, breaking the previous records of David Costill, who established respective marks of 1:36.79 (2016) and 3:36.54 (2017).

Too bad I heard about this meet now. I wish I could have heard earlier so I could have swam at the meet and watched these legendary swimmers swim!
