Lochte, Clary, Vollmer Headline 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Charlotte

Individual Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Tyler Clary and Dana Vollmer are among the headlining names competing at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte, USA Swimming announced today.

Lochte and Clary train out of SwimMAC Carolina, making the meet a natural fit geographically. A number of other big SwimMAC names were on USA Swimming’s list, including Anthony Ervin and Cullen Jones.

USA Swimming touts more than 30 national teamers and more than 500 total swimmers among those competing at the newly-renovated aquatic center in Charlotte. Full psych sheets should be available within the week. The meet begins next Thursday, May 12, and runs through Sunday, May 15.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – 2012 individual Olympic champions Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla./SwimMAC Carolina), Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./SwimMAC Carolina) and Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas/California Aquatics) are expected to compete at next week’s Arena Pro Swim Series at Charlotte, one of the final tune-ups ahead of this summer’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming.

 

Held at the newly renovated Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, the long-course meters meet opens Thursday, May 12 with a distance session at 4 p.m. EDT. Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15 the meet consists of daily prelims at 9 a.m. EDT and finals at 6 p.m. EDT. Tickets are on sale now online.

 

Television coverage of May 14-15 finals from Charlotte will air on NBC Sports Network on delay, while NBC Sports Live Extra will stream May 14-15 finals live. A live webcast of the entire meet also will be available at usaswimming.org.

Additional Team USA Olympic medalists slated to compete include the likes of Claire Donahue (Lenoir City, Tenn./South Florida Aquatic Club), Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Trojan Swim Club), Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif./Unattached), Jimmy Feigen (San Antonio, Texas/New York Athletic Club),Cullen Jones (Irvington, N.J./SwimMAC Carolina) and Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz./California Aquatics).

Also expected to swim is Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn./Club Wolverine), who is already qualified for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in the 10-kilometer open-water event.

 

In total, more than 30 members of the USA Swimming National Team and 500-plus swimmers are expected to compete in Charlotte.

 

The 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming will be held June 26-July 3 in Omaha, Nebraska.

 

The Arena Pro Swim Series at Charlotte is the fifth of seven stops of the 2015-16 Arena Pro Swim Series. As part of USA Swimming’s partnership with swimwear leader Arena, the circuit will feature a record $350,000 in overall prize money. Swimmers may earn awards for top-three finishes in all individual Olympic events across the series. At each meet, $1,000 will be provided for a first-place finish, $600 for second and $200 for third. In addition to the single-event prize money, the overall male and female winners of the season-long Series will earn a $10,000 bonus.

 

For the third consecutive season, longtime USA Swimming partner BMW will award the grand prize of a one-year lease of a BMW vehicle to the highest-scoring eligible male and female U.S. swimmers.

 

Male and female overall Arena Pro Swim Series champions will be honored at the conclusion of the 2015-16 series based on the number of points accumulated throughout the seven meets. Participants will be awarded points in each individual Olympic event throughout the duration of the Series (Five points for first, three for second, one point for third place).

 

Katie Ledecky currently leads the women’s Arena Pro Swim Series standings with 55 points, while Nathan Adrian tops the men’s standings with 40 points.

I’ve wondered the same about Missy. Not in Charlotte, at least so far. Not in Atlanta. I think that’s the better thing for her right now. Keep training in Colorado at high altitude. Please no more events and travels for the sponsors and the media. All for the summer now. She needs to focus entirely on her training.

+1. Seebohm in going 58.0 and at least 2.04.0, so I hope Todd and Missy can get her LCM mojo back.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Vollmer. I wasn’t sure she would be able to get under :58.

Shocked you didn’t think Vollmer would get back under 58! She has a very strong work ethic and I think being a Mom has helped her even more. I knew after her 2013 season that after she came back she would be even better, I hope she can challenge Sjostrom in Rio. Hoping for a 55 for Vollmer in Omaha… I think Missy is in a much better place with Todd, since he is the one who brought her to greatness. He knows her more than Teri and she is more mature and knows her body well enough now with all she’s been through, they will be ready for Rio. I believe Missy and Dana can do it!

Is Missy not doing a meet that weekend?? If so, good move for her to keep training for OTs.

The American federation must not be very happy with that meet in Atlanta the same weekend as their usual Charlotte Grand Prix.
Bad news for Charlotte fans too. No Ledecky. No Dressel. No Adrian. No Coughlin. And many others.
