BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men’s and women’s swimming programs opened the 2021-22 dual meet season with wins Saturday afternoon. Both teams beat St. Francis Brooklyn in the two-day, two-pool Brooklyn Invitational. The women’s team beat the Terriers 215-128, while the men won 199-114.

The Sharks had lots of top finishes and strong performances in the first meets of the year.

On the women’s side, freshman Allie Bashor had wins in both the 100 and 200 fly, while sophomore Venna Andersen won the 50 and 100 free. Freshman Lelah Davidson was also a dual winner, taking the top spot in the 200 free, the 500 free, and coming in second in the 100 free.

For the men, Daniel Chocano Fernández won both the 200 and 400 IM and took second in the 1000, while sophomore Giannis Venetos took the top spot in the 100 and 200 breast.

Up next, the Sharks host Saint Francis U. and Saint Peter’s in a tri meet, Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m.

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Francis College Brooklyn Men’s Swimming and Diving team concluded the Brooklyn Invite on Saturday afternoon.  Despite being shorthanded, the Terriers fought hard but lost to LIU by a score of 114 – 199.

The Brooklyn Invite ran alongside the women’s invite and began on Friday afternoon at St. Francis College. The meet concluded on Sunday afternoon at LIU.

The Terrier Men’s squad saw numerous standouts throughout the meet, highlighted by an incredible debut for freshman Robbie Wagner.  The Montana native won all 4 individual events he competed in. Wagner hit the wall first in the:

  • 200-yard Free with a time of 1:46.43.
  • 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:58.6.
  • 200-yard back with time of 1:55.09.
  • and a come from behind victory in the 1000 free, with a time in 10:00.07.
DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Benedek Lendvai was able to get to the wall close behind Wagner to take the 2nd place finish in the 200 Free with a time of 1:47.89. Steven Dawkins took 4th place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:51.35 to complete the best scorer event for the Terriers.
  • Danie Santos picked up the next win for team in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of  21.84.
  • Vlad Petras and Marko Danev finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the 200-yard Butterfly, to close the gap for the Terriers.
  • The Terriers earned a 2nd place finish in the last event of Day 1.  The Relay team of Daniel Santos, Robbie Wagner, Kamil Goleniec and Benedek Lendvai finished with a time of 1:27.83, just narrowly coming in 2nd by .37.
Day 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Junior Benedek Lendvai battled in the 500-yard Freestyle to earn a 2nd place finish with a time 4:58.36
  • Senior Marko Danev recorded a time of 49.83 in the 100-yard Freestyle to help win the event for the Terriers.
  • St. Francis College took second the 400-yard freestyle relay. Earning a second-place finish was Daniel Santos, Robbie Wagner, Benedek LendvaiKamil Goleniec with a final time of 3:13.91
  • First Year Breaststroker Uros Canic open up with a strong second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also raced to an exciting finish and narrowly pulled out the come behind victory in the 200 Breaststroke, missing the win by .16 and ending with time of 2:12.98.
  • Junior Sprinter, Daniel Sanots continued his dominance in the sprints, winning the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 47.59.

The Terriers are back in action on Friday, October 15 for a dual against Iona College at Iona College.
