The longest event of the evening actually produced the tightest finish on Saturday as Liberty edged Campbell by just .06 seconds in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Kaycee Cannings (1:53.00), Kate Baker (1:51.75), Shelby Kahn (1:55.01), and Hannah Huenefeld (1:54.91) combined for Liberty’s final time of 7:34.67. Campbell’s Colleen Renshaw (1:52.18), Meredith Ashburn (1:55.39), Angelica Ragazzoni (1:54.45), and Laura Lopez (1:52.71) nearly pulled off the come-from-behind victory in 7:34.73.
The Flames had their best showing in the 200 free, sweeping the podium thanks to Kate Baker (1:52.44), Eva Suggs (1:52.65), and Shelby Kahn (1:53.03). Liberty went 1-2 in the 100 breast, with Jamyson Robb (1:03.72) just barely out-touching Jessica Schellenboom (1:03.79) in the second-closest race of the night.
Other individual winners for the Flames included Chloe Harris in the 100 fly (55.25), Grace Isaacs in the 400 IM (4:23.67), and Abbie Shaw in the 100 back (53.66). In the 100 fly, Harris broke into Liberty’s top-10 all-time, now ranked No. 8 in the school record books. Liberty’s seven individual event wins have all come courtesy of different swimmers.
The Flames’ lone loss of the meet came on Friday in the 50 free, where Ashburn (22.28) and Elishka Hajek (23.49) posted a 1-2 finish for Campbell.
On Saturday, Piper Burton helped keep the Camels’ deficit in the double digits by placing second in the 100 fly (56.55), third in the 100 breast (1:03.87) and swimming a 28.76 breaststroke split on 200 medley relay squad that broke a school record with its runner-up finish in 1:42.16. Maialen Sudupe also tallied a second-place finish with her 4:27.89 in the 400 IM behind Isaacs. Ragazzoni and fellow Campbell freshman Laura Lopez went 2-3 in the 100 back behind Shaw.
Liberty’s fall invitational concludes Sunday with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 free relay.
