Li Bingjie Talks to Media After Distance Sweep at World Champs (Chinese)

2021 FINA SHORT COURSE SWIMMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Reported by Michael Hamann.

WOMEN’S 400 FREESTYLE – FINALS

  • World Record: 3:53.92 – TITMUS Ariarne (AUS) 14 DEC 2018
  • Championship Record: 3:53.92 – TITMUS Ariarne (AUS) 14 DEC 2018
  • World Junior Record: 3:53.97 – WANG Jianjiahe (CHN) 4 OCT 2018

Podium:

Chinese 19-year-old Li Bingjie left no opportunities for anyone to take the lead over her. Just 24 hours after cracking the Championships Record in the 800 free, Bingjie took the lead immediately in the 400, and managed to build that lead through the back half of the race. The 3rd 100 was huge for Bingjie, as she split 59.85, marking the only sub-1:00 split in the field.

It’s really nice to see her enjoying herself and laughing. I always thought she was shy and quiet. Nope. Happy for her.

The chinese have their own instagram called xiaohongshu meaning little red book in English and it has nothing to do with Mao Zedong.

If she posts on Instagram, not many chinese people will see the pics.

If she posts on xiaohongshu, a lot of people will see it within china.

Instagram does not have much of a presence within china, unless the posts are for a foreign audience.

I don’t think Instagram or youtube will ever take off in china as the chinese equivalents xiaohongshu and bilibili respectively are already cornering the market with more relevant chinese specific content, they both have more relevant content for chinese speakers.

Both are actually growing fast in taiwan too outpacing youtube and Instagram.

Chinese instagram is xiaohongshu.

Weibo released their own instagram/xiaohongshu clone called oasis but it never took off. You can check it out on Google.

Weibo has instagram like features but so does weixin. However, both weibo and weixin are not the instagram of china. Xiaohongshu is.

Weibo has more twitter functionality with a touch of instagram in it. This is why they launched the oasis app. But xiaohongshu had already cornered the market so oasis never took off

Translation:

Li: The time is exactly what I expected. I thought it would be around 3:55.
Interviewer: How do you feel right now?
Li: I’m actually a little bit exhausted. I was tired after the 800 yesterday, and was still feeling it when I got up this morning.
Interviewer: How are you going to recover?
Li: Well sleep earlier and sleep more.
Interviewer: What’s your next race?
Li: 4×2 relay.
Interviewer: What’s the goal?
Li: Some of our best 200 freestylers are not here, so we will just try our best.
