Le Clos Records Season’s Best 200 Freestyle in Stellenbosch

On the second day of the Stellenbosch South African Grand Prix Chad le Clos won his third and fourth event of the weekend. le Clos took the men’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.22, over three seconds ahead of the field. It was his season’s best and places him 12th in the world rankings.

He then went on to win the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 22.69, which is 47 one-hundredths of a second off his season’s best that he recorded in Dubai in November.

There was a huge upset in the men’s 100 breaststroke as Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh was beaten by Jarred Crous. The race came down to the final meter as Crous finished in a time of 1:01.22 beating van der Burgh by three one-hundredths of a second.

On the women’s side Tatjana Schoenmaker finished her sweep of the breaststroke events. On Saturday Schoenmaker won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.39 and followed that up by taking both the 50 (32.33) and 200 (2:26.50) on Sunday. Her time in the 200 breaststroke puts her 23rd in the world rankings.

Lauren Quigley of Great Britain took both the 100 freestyle (55.95) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.22). That made four wins on the weekend for Quigley who won both the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke on Saturday.

Quigley’s British compatriot Holly Hibbot also collected two more gold on Sunday winning the 200 butterfly (2:14.68) and the 400 freestyle (4:16.48).
