Larkin Rising: Leads World Cup Cluster 3 Points After 60 in Doha

Australian Mitch Larkin has blown up on the third cluster of the FINA World Cup series, rolling up 60 points at the Doha stop to take the Cluster 3 lead over series leader Cameron van der Burgh.

Larkin hit the top FINA points performance on the men’s side with his blazing 52.26 in the 100 back. that ws good for 24 bonus points, and he now leads van der Burgh in the cluster by 27.

In an interesting twist, 5 of the 6 performance bonuses came out of the 100 backstrokes, easily the most competitive races of the Doha meet. Larkin and David Plummer (53.18) were the 1st- and 3rd-best performers of all the men’s events, while Emily Seebohm (58.34), Katinka Hosszu (59.35) and Natalie Coughlin (59.72) swept the performance bonuses on the women’s side.

Unsurprisingly, Hosszu still leads the series, cluster and Doha points for the women. Seebohm is running second in all three.

The South African van der Burgh was the only non-100 backstroker to earn a cluster bonus with his 26.96 in the 50 breast. He still leads the overall series points on the men’s side.

Medal Points

Each individual event yields points for the top 3 finishers.

  • Gold: 12 points
  • Silver: 9 points
  • Bronze: 6 points

World Record Bonuses

Each world record yields 20 points. Tying a world record is worth 10 points.

Performance Bonuses

The top 3 male and top 3 female swims of the meet earn bonus points. Top swims are determined based on FINA points. Only the top-scoring swim from each athlete is counted.

  • First: 24 points
  • Second: 18 points
  • Third: 12 points

  • Mitch Larkin: 100 back, 981 FINA points
  • Cameron van der Burgh: 50 breast, 968 FINA points
  • David Plummer:  100 back, 931 FINA points

Women:

  • Emily Seebohm: 100 back, 988 FINA points
  • Katinka Hosszu: 100 back, 939 FINA points
  • Natalie Coughlin: 100 back, 921 FINA points

Here are the full point standings with one meet to go, sorted by the Cluster 3 totals. The top 6 finishers in each cluster earn huge bonus checks, but the catch is that a swimmer must compete in all three meets within the cluster to be eligible for the bonus.

The cluster bonuses are as follows:
