We’re used to seeing Hungarian teen Kristof Milak fire off some impressive performances, a lá his 1:53.79 200m butterfly world junior record at last year’s European Junior Championships. But the 18-year-old had even higher aspirations tonight while competing at the Hungarian National Championships, crushing a huge personal best of 1:52.71 to manhandle the stacked field, one that included Olympians Tamas Kenderesi and Laszlo Cseh.
Splitting 53.92 on the opening leg, Milak closed in 58.79 to hack close to a second off of his 1:53.79 from Netanya. In that race, he opened faster in 53.24, but back-halfed in 1:00.55, so tonight’s performance was set apart by his 2nd 50. Kenderesi couldn’t keep up, clocking 1:54.14 for silver, with iconic Cseh in bronze with 1:56.45.
Milak positioned himself among the all-time greats in the event with his monster performance. His eye-popping outing tonight now ranks as the 6th fasetst performance ever, while the teen checks-in as the 3rd fastest performer of all-time.
- Michael Phelps, 1:51.51, 2009 (WR)
- Michael Phelps, 1:52.03, 2008
- Michael Phelps, 1:52.09, 2007
- Michael Phelps, 1:52.20, 2008
- Laszlo Cseh, 1:52.70, 2008
- Kristof Milak, 1:52.71, 2018
Just as his European Junior Championships title came in a time faster than the legend Michael Phelps was at 17, Milak’s performance this evening also out-paces Phelps’ fastest effort as an 18-year-old. At the 2003 World Championships, Phelps fired off 1:53.93 at 18 years of age, while Milak’s time tonight of 1:52.71 is well beneath that.
What do you guys think he could go in SCY right now?
His SCM best is 1:52.02 from last November, he is better in LC.
He hasn’t swum short course that much. He swims predominantly long course like phelps.
True. But look at his turns. He isn’t as good as in SC.
The most impressive thing i see on his swimming is that unless “Frog Leap style” of Cseh with extra strong kicks he keeps his body position Very Very low on the race
Yes, and not only swimming but looking forward too 🙂
He has a very solid second 100. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is in the 1:51 range sometime next year. And it’s great to see Cseh is still competing.
I think this year. Let’s wait till the Europeans.
Milak is going sub 50 in the 100 fly very soon. I can sense it.
2nd fastest textile time in history, at 18 too. This kid is going places.
Dressel will crush him.
Laszlo Cseh still alive and kickin’ props to im for stickin around so long. o and dang Kristof!!
Stunning; I havent seen Milak in person yet, but I can’t wait to at Euros now. He and Kolesnikov could be Europe’s challengers to Dressel on fly/free, if Kolesnikov doesnt specialise.
Kolesnikov? He hasn’t shown anything in fly. There are other guys like Kuimov
I think he meant Kolesnikov free..
Yes, I did. He hasnt swum it much, but I saw him early this year and he looked very special – His kick was ridiculous, and easy, so easy. He has huge potential on freestyle.
Oh my mistake
I think he’s referring to the “free” part of the “fly/free” with Kolesnikov.
Kolesnikov has great potential in back (obviously) & free – so far at least from what we’ve all been seeing.
Kolesnikov has the potential to be scary good. It’s amazing that he swims as fast as he does already without hardly any discernible muscle tone. He’s all arms and legs. As he gets older and stronger, he could very well be the one to challenge Dressel in the freestyle events, and he will become the one to beat in backstroke. Murphy has his work cut out for him.
I have been fantazing about him going thst time all year. Specifically 1:52.71. Wow.
