Russia’s dynamic backstroker, Kliment Kolesnikov, wrecked 6 records with 1 swim as he raced his way to gold in the 50m backstroke tonight in Glasgow.
Most notably, Kolesnikov’s winning time of 24.00 established a new World Record, overtaking the previous supersuited mark set by Liam Tancock set back at the 2009 World Championships at 24.04.
Kolesnikov put the field on notice with his opening round swims, clocking prelims and semi times of 24.58 and 24.25, respectively, to be situated as the 2nd seed after each. However, Kolesnikov launched himself off the blocks on a mission in tonight’s final, set on getting his hand on the wall first.
At 18 years of age, Kolesnikov annihilated his previous personal best entering this meet of 24.46 and crushed the new World Record, World Junior Record, European Record, European Junior Record, Championship Record and Russian National Record with his one monumental 24.00 swim.
This is the 2nd world record set at these championships and within this one session, as Great Britain’s Adam Peaty smashed a 57.00 100m breaststroke earlier.
We’ll see Kolesnikov race the 100m distance beginning tomorrow at these European Championships.

I love seeing super suit record fall
but I’m conflicted here. mr tamcock has arguably one of the best names In the sport. second only to misty hyman. im bitter sweet about seeing his name leave the record books
seriously though, all jokes aside, nothing makes me happier than seeing super suit records go down. no problem with suits, just a love for the sportand for the athletes
The first swimmer, male or female, born this century to break a long course WR. Same for short course (100 back).
He is the next big thing. Coming soon 100m back WR (2019) and 200m back WR (2020)
Another suited WR off the books, good day. For the men, we have 9 more individual suited WRs remaining (long course). The women only have 3 individual long course WRs remaining in the long course.
Mens 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 free, 200 bk, 100, 200 fly, 400 IM left – would like to see Dressel get the 100 fly at least and maybe sprint frees this year – maybe Kalisz 400 IM?
Womens 200 free, 50 bk and 200 fly – I have a feeling that 200 fly will stand for a long time. That 50 back could go soon!! and I think 200 fr will be gone by or in the Tokyo final
womens 4×200 relay could go this year….
Last week, 58.00. Earlier today, 57.00. Now, 24.00. All these new world record are SO close to breaking new second barriers!
They haven’t paid homage to Dean Farris yet.
So many WRs ending in .00
1:42.00
1:54.00
58.00
57.00
And now 24.00
What a great swim
