The annual Energy Standard Cup brings some of the top juniors in Europe together for a two-day competition in a meet that serves, among other things, as a qualifier for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Known primarily as a backstroker, Kliment Kolesnikov busted out with top times in the 100 free and 200 free Saturday.  First, he took the 100 free in 49.52 in the morning session before winning the 200 free with a 1:49.80 in the evening session.  Kolesnikov represents Russia internationally, and was swimming for the Energy Standard team as well.  Today’s lineup marked a bit of a shift for the backstroke world junior record holder; last year he swept the backstrokes, along with the 200 IM and 50 free.

With the 200 back open with Kolesnikov’s absence, Maxim Stupin, also of Russia/Energy Standard, jumped into the gap and took that event in 2:00.03.  He also earned a double today, winning the 400 IM in the evening session with a strong 4:18.33, with a whopping ten second margin of victory over the next-fastest man in the field.

Italy’s Thomas Ceccon also doubled up today, winning the 100 back with a 55.00 and the 50 free with a 22.97.  Both of those events occurred in the evening session.

Anastasiya Shkurdai of Belarus (and Energy Standard) was the only two event winner on the women’s side today.  In the morning session, she took the 50 fly with a 26.88.  At night, she just touched out Anastasiia Avdeena 1:02.15 to 1:02.20 to get the win in the 100 back.
