Kliment Kolesnikov Sets First SCM 200 Free World Junior Record

2017 VLADIMIR SALNIKOV SWIM CUP

After taking down World Junior Records (WJRs) all month and even a senior Word Record in the 100 back just yesterday, 17-year-old Kliment Kolesnikov has broken yet another WJR, this time setting the first official record of its type in the 200m free.

He cruised to a 1:45.39 in his morning swim at the 2017 Vladimir Salnikov Swim Cup Saturday, taking the top seed heading into finals by only .17, but ended up winning the race by nearly three seconds over 25-year-old Viacheslav Andrusenko‘s 1:44.63.

Kolesnikov’s 1:41.75 bests the “benchmark” WJR of 1:41.95, established in 2015, but is yet to be ratified by Fina.

En route to his record-setting swim, Kolesnikov split 23.54/26.33/25.95/25.93.

Though he’s still a ways away from the Russian senior record (1:40.08), Kolesnikov’s swim puts him at #5 in the world this year.

Just watched that race twice. On the last lap, his head broke the surface of the water past the 15 meter mark (though it also looks as if his hand broke the surface before that mark). Not sure whether the rule is that the head — or any part of the body — has to break the surface before 15 meters.

Whoops, my mistake. I was looking at the halfway mark on the lane lines, they don’t seem to have a 15 meters mark in that pool, but he didn’t cross it. (I can’t figure out how to erase the above comment.)

Right now Russia has a crazy good generation on the men’s side and Canada looks crazy good on the women’s side. Will USA, as usual, respond in time for the next olympic games? No more MP, but they have with Dressel, KL, Murphy, Lilly King, Simone Manuel and Nathan Adrian 5 big leaders. Add a very promising generation coming with Regan Smith, Walsh sisters, Isabel Ivey, Zoe Bartel, Emily Weiss, Brooke Forde or Claire Tuggle on the women’s side and Foster brothers, Robert Finke, Andrew Abruzzo, Daniel Roy, Destin Lasco, Drew Kibler, Reece Whitley or Michael Andrew on the men’s side and you understand that USA will be, as usual, the nation to beat in an olympic year. But it’s… Read more »

Yeah the Russian men are ahead of their women and are building depth while the Canadian women are ahead of their men and are building depth. The Russian men could give the US men some problems in the future while the Canadian women could give the US women some problems too. I,m talking about relays here. The US is strong in both genders so they have the mixed medley relay in the bag in Tokyo. The Canadian women don’t have a great breastroker yet tho. Lilly king has that leg on lockdown for the US.

Faith Nelson had a very strong showing in breaststroke at WJrs. While she wasn’t as impressive as Ruck, Oleksiak, or Sanchez, with some development she could become the breaststroker that Canada needs.

@gigi:
How is it possible for self-respecting analyst to bring in the discussion of the future of American swimming the name of Missy Franklin and not even mentioning Mallory Comerford. She was the brightest and the most unexpected surprise of the year 2017.
Two seconds improvement in 100 free to the territory where only Campbell sisters had their personal bests before this season. Her personal best is just 0.32sec slower than unreachable even in dreams for American sprinters the 52.27 of Simone Manuel. When have American sprinters had ranks of #2 and #3 being surpassed by the world record time only. She has also improved by 2.5 sec at 200 free sealing her place in 4×200 relay. I… Read more »

Yohzik,

Timewise, they are similar somewhat. However when discussing leadership, media attention, and her mere presence doesn’t even compare to Missy Franklin.

I’m not knocking Comerford at all, she just doesn’t bring the same stuff to the table.

Whatever…
I agree that they bring different stuff. And then it is the matter of taste. I personally prefer Comerford’s table.
I’m just praying that nothing will happen to her like it was in Weitzeil’s case.
Who could imagine 9 months ago that we have 52.59 undiscovered for so long time talent? That only four swimmers in the entire history of competitive swimming are capable to swim faster than her.
Listen to her early interviews: neither she nor her coaches suspected that such a huge gift sleeps inside. And she is 20 yo already. That is what surprises me most in her case.

He is also very good in fly (and good breastoker in SCM). So I wuoldn’t be surprise if next year he sets some record in the IM (100 or 200).

Impressive. Like everybody here I hope he’s clean. Russia crushes the junior competitions in Europe for a few years now so it’s not surprising to see them start to dominate at the senior level. Again hopefully there’s no State doping behind all of that and it’s just the natural talent of a brilliant new Russian generation which explains these performances.

Can’t wait till this kid gets drug tested.
Also, I think Texas is going to get the 4-peat

He’s most likely been drug tested many times. I guarentee if someone made comments like that about the foster brothers or the walsh sisters or Milak then people would be much more outraged

I agree, and I have taken flack a few times for pointing these things out myself. However, lets not pretend we should view the peformances of athletes from Russia (among others) in the same light athletes from other nations. Remember, the issue if doping in Russia goes behind the individual, there is clear and verifiably evidence of athletes/coaches and representative bodies in Russia (I.e sports bodies & testing labs) colluding to manipulate test results. In these circumstances, it’s really a logical train of thought to say simply passing a test is not enough.

I completely understand why people are unsure of great performances from Russian athletes, it makes sense, it just gets annoying seeing amazing performances from young swimmers but having the comments filled with “wow so I guess they aren’t drug testing him”, when if a kid from the US did it there would be nothing but praise and congratulations, that’s all I am trying to point out.
