Kick Set: Ricky Berens vs Matt Grevers

It’s not often that you happen to be at a pool when two Olympians from different clubs are pushing one another in a training set. I caught up with Olympians Ricky Berens and Matt Grevers at NCAAs in between sessions, getting after a kick set with Tucson Ford Coach Johno Fergusson. Here’s the set:

3 Times:

3×100 Descend 1-3 (looking for a slight negative split)

3×50 under/over (descend under/strong on over)

Berens, who trains with Eddie Reese and is a volunteer assistant at Texas, is known for his amazing workouts. Grevers, who trains with Rick DeMont and Eric Hansen and is a volunteer assistant at Arizona, is highly competitive but known as more of a… how do I say this nicely? Sally save up? Both boys brought it for the camera in this little kick set…

I would think Sammy Saveup for Matt and Sally Saveup for whatever-female-swimmer-to-which-it-applies.

In another time it was known as “Sandbagging” it took guts to do it. Presume this is yards at Indie. In 1956 watched Frank Brunell kick a 100 in 59 sec and feet didn’t really break the water when the 100 record was 49. In summer of 56 training in Philly at Kelly Pool was doing times everyday that should have made the 56 team. I know because he passed me in all distances in the last 50 or 100 up to 1500 . Did finish 5 th in 400 and 1500 as a senior in HS. Won 400 IM in summer of 59. Won National 4 mile in summer 54. A great talent in that time.

And we called it sandbagging in the 60s too….but it included acts of deception at meets . Still very popular at Masters meets where your opponent trouts our a litany of medical complaints and then cleans your clock at Nationals. Actually sandbagging is one of the charms of masters swimming…listening to these very fit swimmer talk as if they just crawled out of the intensive care when they are generally just a fit as personal trainers 20 years younger.

Great workout video…glad to see they’re starting to come in more and more frequently like Floswimming.

On another note, what song is at the beginning?

I’ve always heard Sammy Save-up. Maybe it’s political correctness. Not fair to pick on poor Sally anymore 😉

I always heard Sammy Save-Up and Steve Saturday. We even have a Sammy Save-Up song – you can sing it to the Flipper Theme song.
