Kentucky Wildcats Drop Cincinnati at Home on Senior Day

Full results

The Kentucky women didn’t give up a single event in the pool today, and were led by Geena Freriks and Kendra Crew, who each earned two wins.

Freriks, a freshman, took sprint duties and captured victories in the 50 free (23.96) and 100 free (51.74). Meanwhile, Crew swept the breaststrokes. She finished first in the 100 (1:04.47) and blew away the field by five seconds in the 200 (2:17.81).

Top flight backstroker Danielle Galyer led off the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays, but stuck to freestyle for her individual events. She won the 500 with the only time under 5 minutes (4:59.79) and came in 2nd (by one hundredth of a second) in the 200 free. Kendal Casey took the 200 free (1:51.63), with Galyer right behind her at 1:51.64.

This was a big win for the Wildcats, as they topped Cincinnati with a score of 210 to 84.

Meanwhile, the Kentucky men also had a fairly large win over the Bearcats. They did give up an event, the 1000 free, to Cincinnati, however. Sophomore Chris Bready clocked a time of 9:21.90 to take the event by almost four seconds.

Despite that, the Wildcats won all other events. They were led by breaststroker George Greenhalgh, who took first in the 100 (55.37) and 200 breaststrokes (2:02.54). Greenhalgh, a senior, also provided a quick 24.78 breaststroke leg on UK’s winning medley relay to open the meet.

Anchoring that medley in an impressive 19.81 was freshman Cobe Garcia, which is a very positive sign for Kentucky’s sprint future. Garcia’s best time in the 50 free, according to the USA Swimming database, is a 20.36. That happens to be the time that he went leading off Kentucky’s 200 free relay at the end of the meet, which came after his then-best of 20.43 in the individual 50 free, which he won.

Isaac Jones provided another spark for Kentucky, as he won the 200 fly (1:48.62) as well as the 400 IM (3:58.98). The final score favored the Wildcats, 195 to 100.
