Swimmers in Fresno, California took to the pool over the weekend at the Central California Long Course Junior Olympic Championships.
One of the top performers on the women’s side of the meet was Kendall Moffitt of North Country Aquatics who swept the distance freestyle podiums. Moffitt was a 4:39.22 in the 400 freestyle, a 9:34.76 in the 800, and an 18:27.20 in the 1500. All 3 of those swims for Moffitt represented new PBs for Moffitt, improving upon her previous marks of 4:40.15 from 2018, 9:42.24 from 2019, and 18:28.28 from 2018.
Along with her freestyle wins, Moffitt managed to take gold in the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly with winning times of 5:22.31 and 2:26.29 which made it 5-for-5 best times at the meet.
Sandpipers of Nevada swimmer Julie Merlin was another multi-winner at the meet as she posted the top time in 200 backstroke and IM. In the backstroke, Merlin posted a dominant time of 2:27.34 which was nearly 4 seconds quicker than silver medalist Naya Koc of Puma Aquatic Team who came in with a 2:31.26. In the 200 IM, Merlin and Koc engaged in a much tighter race with Merlin topping the field in a 2:29.16 to Koc’s 2:29.87. Koc’s Puma Aquatic teammate Emilie Giannini rounded out the podium with a 2:30.35 for bronze.
Both of Merlin’s swims represented new PBs for her as she went from a 2:28.44 to a 2:27.34 in the backstroke and from a 2:32.84 in the 200 breast to a 2:29.16 in the IM.
As for the men, Justin Lopresto of the Douglas Dolfins Swim Team threw down a 25.85 to collect gold in the men’s 50 freestyle, edging out Tiger Aquatic’s Nate Rasmussen by just 0.01 seconds. The swim for LoPresto was just off his own PB in the event of 24.73 which he posted just a few months ago. Rasmussen on the other hand record a new best time with a 25.86 he swam for silver, getting under his former PB of 25.57 from June 2021.
Grant Lindblom from Almaden Riptide rounded out the podium with a 24.96 while Merced Skimmers’ Seth Rollins was a 25.01 for 4th place overall.
50 freestyle silver medalist Nate Rasmussen also managed to deliver a new PB in the men’s 100 freestyle with a 53.76 for the gold medal. He was victorious by half a second in the event, beating out Ojai Heat Waves swimmer Quin Seider‘s 54.26. Grant Lindblom added to his 50 free bronze with a third place finish in the 100, hitting a 55.56.
Rasmussen also reached the podium in the men’s 400 freestyle where he posted a 4:15.08 for silver, trailing North Coast Aquatics’ Zachary Billotte who won gold (4:14.68). Zachary Billotte and Rasmussen were joined on the podium by Samuel Billotte who notched a 4:26.08 for bronze. Nate Rasmussen and Zachary Billotte also made it onto the 800 freestyle podium with a 17:41.84 and a 17:52.14 for gold and silver, respectively.
