Katinka Hosszu Now Owns All of the Hungarian SC National Records

Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu has made a name for herself by showing off incredible versatility, stamina, and fortitude by taking on insane meet schedules week-after-week-after-week.

On Friday, however, she took a different approach. Hosszu made a quick stop at the Austrian Short Course National Championships in Graz to swim a single race: the 1500 short course meters freestyle. The event, which is not raced for women at either the Short Course World Championships nor on the World Cup circuit, was the only Hungarian National Record that Hosszu didn’t hold coming into the day.

With a 16:04.85 in the timed final, though, she cleared a clean sweep of the Hungarian Record books. The time cut more than a minute from the old record of 17:18.73 swum by Zsanett Kovacs in October of 2013. There are 18 individual Hungarian senior records for women in short course meters, and Hosszu now holds every single one of them.

In long course, where there are 17 recognized events, Hosszu also holds over half of the national records with 9.

The swim, which won Hosszu the Austrian open title by 9 seconds, comes in a week where she called for the resignation of the president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation Tamas Gyarfas. Hosszu’s name, imprinted all over the country’s (and world’s) record books, has a long-standing feud with Gyarfas, and says that he didn’t provide Hungarian Olympians with proper training conditions or support.
