In a post-race interview Katie McLaughlin of Santa Margarita reveals the motivation behind her record-breaking swims at CIF-SS Division 1 Championships. “It’s so much energy, with my team behind me!” she tells SwimSwam’s Anne Lepesant.
McLaughlin broke the CIF-SS D1 record in the 200 free (1:45.39, which she had set last year as a member of the JSerra High School team) going 1:44.66. She then broke not only the D1 record in the 100 fly, but also the national independent school record, with an astounding 51.78. See the article here.
Although most other parts of the country have long finished their high school seasons and are focused solely on the long-course season by the middle of May, Californian teenagers are straddling both long- and short-course training. But Katie McLaughlin doesn’t mind; she loves the team aspect of high school swimming. Hear what she has to say about it.
No doubt she’ll go to Rio.

Is Katie related to Mark McLaughlin?
I saw his name in the results but sorry, absolutely no idea.
after watching that race im almost sure she can make the pan pac/world team in both fly races. She went so fast but with very pedestrian underwaters but was smoking on top of the water. Most 100 flyers who can go that fast rely heavily on underwaters. In long course she will be in her element.
Predictions for nationals results
100 fly:
Donohue
Mclaughlin
felicia Lee
200 fly:
camille adams
katie
dirado
I may not be popular for saying this, but I hope that there are TWO Katie’s that forego starting college in 2015-2016 in order to train for Rio. It is just a big risk switching training programs 10 months before Trials, and both seem to currently be on a great path.
KLORND, I agree with your 100 swimmers, but for the 200, I would actually go with Katie and Becca Mann.
Either way, Katie has the body position, feel for the water, and Nadador base for a great future in the fly events.
I agree with you about college for both Katie.
