Katie Ledecky took down a National Independent High School Record in her first individual swim at the 2013 Metro Championships in Maryland, though after this swim and Missy Franklin’s IM out in Colorado, Dagny Knutson still rides high in the overall high school record books.
Ledecky swam a 1:42.96 in the 200 free, which actually breaks Franklin’s old record o 1:43.15 set last February. Knutson, who swam for a public school in Minot, North Dakota, is still the fastest high schooler ever in 1:42.81.
Ledecky will get one more pop at breaking a National Record that she already set on Friday during prelims of the 500 free in 4:33.14, which took down both the independent and overall school records.
The comparative splits to Franklin’s swim show a bit of peculiarity. Franklin, who has more speed, was out a bit faster at the 50 mark last year than Ledecky was this year, but Ledecky’s final 50 yards were faster to grab the record by two tenths.
Franklin ’12: 24.13 – 26.02 – 26.63 – 26.37 – 1:43.15
Ledecky ’13 24.49 – 25.80 – 26.58 – 26.09 – 1:42.96
