WOMEN’S 200M FREESTYLE – FINALS
2013 World Champion: Missy Franklin, USA – 1:54.81
World Record: 1:52.98 – Federica Pellegrini, ITA – 2009
Championship Record: 1:52.98 – Federica Pellegrini, ITA – 2009
GOLD: Katie Ledecky, USA – 1:55.16
SILVER: Federica Pellegrini, ITA – 1:55.32
BRONZE: Missy Franklin, USA – 1:55.49
Katie Ledecky continues to impress every time she dives in the water. Ledecky hammered through the second half of her 200 freestyle to pull out the win and take home another gold medal. She touched the wall first with a time of 1:55.16, finishing just ahead of the silver medalist and world record holder, Federica Pellegrini. Pellegrini touched second with a 1:55.32. The 2013 World Champion, Missy Franklin, earned the bronze medal with her time of 1:55.49.
The entire podium finished under 1:56, while the rest of the field remained above the barrier. Russia’s Veronika Popova just missed the podium, finishing in fourth at 1:56.16.
Katinka Hosszu (HUN), Shen Duo (CHN), Emma McKeon (AUS), and Femke Heemskerk (NED) all finished fifth through eighth, respectively, with 1:56’s.
Missy seems to have packed on the pounds…could be college eating but she could definitely lose about 15.
Miss Franklin is a classy lady. She maintains her Christian witness even after disappointing swims. Bravo Missy!
i know missy got 3rd but it bothers me how she’s always there for Katie’s interviews when they race and Katie comes out on top. Anyone remember the 200 interview at nationals last summer? In this interview, you could tell missy couldn’t wait to throw in her 2 cents. Sorry, just bothers me how bubbly she is all the time. Go ledecky!!!
NBC does that all of the time and it drives me nuts. They did it with Phelps and Lochte before. I understand NBC has it’s set “stars” but let the results determine who those people are.
why can’t I see the Kathie Ledecky 200 meter swim? The message I get is that the video is unavailable in my area? Who decides?
Give this a shot. NBC does’t want the rest of the World free loading off their hard work 🙂

Katie’s face was priceless when the interviewer said, “Seven events, seven golds, on the cusp of history.” I feel like I have seen a similar error repeated in multiple reports in the mainstream media where the reporters clearly don’t follow swimming that much. For example, I also read today (not on SwimSwam) that Katie might win 6 golds in Rio because she would pick up the 100 (presumably both relay and individual to get to a total of 6). I feel like it is such a shame that the coverage keeps trying to add up to these Phelpsian medal totals that are unrealistic for Katie given that she is a distance swimmer and doesn’t do many relays, and she clearly… Read more »
I agree with your sentiment… but as far as “7 events, 7 golds” — I think she’s simply saying that Katie has swum 7 events at Worlds in 2013/2015, and has 7 golds: 400, 800, 1500 800 FR in 2013; 200, 400, 1500 in 2015
Thanks–I hadn’t thought of that, and you’re probably right. I guess I’ve just seen so many articles mentioning unrealistic medal projections that it’s become a bit of a pet peeve.
