Justin Ress’ 200 Free Absence at NCAAs Was Due to an Injury; Uncertain for Rest of Meet

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

NC State’s Justin Ress was a declared false start in this morning’s 200 free prelims, but SwimSwam has confirmed that his absence was due to an injury. A spokesperson for NC State tells SwimSwam that Ress has a back injury. His availability for the rest of the meet is uncertain, but he is doing better this afternoon.

Ress was NC State’s highest seeded man in the individual 200 free, entering the meet at #6. He’s put up some big relay splits for his team, including a 1:30.77 anchor on the champion 800 free relay. Ress anchored in 40.82 to help the Wolfpack to a 2nd place finish in the 400 medley relay last night. He also helped NC State to 2nd in the 200 free relay with a quick 18.31 on the 2nd leg.

Should he be able to swim the rest of the meet, his remaining swims could be the 100 free, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay.

Regrettable news, particularly at the time of this championship competition — I hope that he recovers and is able to continue with the meet.

@Lauren — I’m so sorry that I bungled my post; I wrote it, and then I panicked because I was worried that using “f***ing,” even in that form, was inappropriate for the forum. So, I tried to delete it, but I was only able to edit it, so I wrote a more genuine comment. THEN, I saw that people replied to my original post in the time that I was editing — I tried to rewrite my original post but I maxed out my editing time. Ah! What a disaster!

(Aside: this is a comment that probably should have remained within my inner monologue…) I tend to forget what “DFS” *actually* stands for; as a whole, I know that it conveys that the swimmer did not compete in the race, but I can never remember the three words that compose the acronym. So, in my head, I read it as: “Didn’t F***ing Swim.” 😛

He was just a little too full of swimming.

Didn’t someone say in another thread that, because he DFSed, he can’t swim all five relays (and so presumably would miss the 2 medley tonight if they want him on the 4 free)?

Does a DFS count as a third individual event? Or is Ress now able to be on all 5 relays?

I believe that in order to declare a false start in an event, you have to have participated in it.

This is just terrible…nobody wants to ever see this happen to an athlete who poured so many hours into training for this moment. I hope he’s able to resume without any discomforts tonite & tomorrow.

He’ll be like Willis Reed limping on to the court, right up to the blocks for the relay final.
