Canadian Junior World Championships Team member Javier Acevedo has verbally committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. This adds another piece to an growing Canadian pipeline to Athens – there’s three other Canadians, including one other Torontonian, on the Bulldogs’ 2015-2016 roster.
“I think (Georgia) has an awesome team environment, amazing coaching staff, and great academics,” Acevedo said of his decision.
“Definitely the place for me! Go Dawgs!”
Acevedo is primarily a sprint freestyler, backstroker, and IM’er. He just missed an individual medal at this summer’s Junior World Championships in Singapore in the 200 IM, placing 4th in the final in 2:01.91. He did bring home some hardware as the leadoff backstroke leg on Canada’s gold medal winning and World Junior Record setting mixed 400 free relay at the World Junior Championships.
Acevedo’s best times in long course meters, (with yards conversions):
- 50 free – 23.19 (20.17)
- 100 free – 49.85 (43.46)
- 200 free – 1:51.03 (1:37.14)
- 100 back – 55.24 (48.68)
- 200 back – 2:02.10 (1:47.83)
- 100 fly – 54.66 (47.98)
- 200 IM – 2:01.91 (1:46.94
While our top 20 recruit rankings focus on Americans because of the uncertainty about which international swimmers will wind up in the NCAA, Acevedo’s time profile is equivalent in caliber to a top 5 recruit, assuming he successfully makes the transition to short course yards.
At Canada’s 2015 World Championship Trials, Acevedo was 3rd in both the 100 free and 200 IM, and ended the season ranked 4th and 3rd overall in those events among Canadians, and nobody his age or younger is anywhere near him in either event.
That puts him in a position to qualify for the Canadian Olympic Team at least as part of the Canadian 400 free relay – which has the potential to be a very, very young relay with none of the country’s top 4 older than 20 as of the end of 2015.

Javier led off the relay in the 4×100 mixed free. He swam it along with Ruck, Olekisek, and Thormeyer.
Javier should transition quickly to yards. Great walls and really strong underwater.
Hey Swim Canada, maybe you need to set up one of your stupid training centres in Athens. All of the top Canadians are going there anyways.
