On the second day of the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, Julia Smit of Stanford is already breaking NCAA records. Smit’s time of 1:52.31 in the 200 IM broke her own American and NCAA records, which she had previously set at last year’s NCAA Championships in 1:52.79.
This record is quite remarkable, considering the previous record was set last year in a polyurethane suit, which has since been banned for providing too much of an advantage. Furthermore, one can only assume that Smit did not rest much for the Pac-10 Championships, as she was already qualified for the NCAA meet, and thus will probably take this record even lower in March.
Smit is the 2009 NCAA Champion in both IM distances. Click here and go to the 37:00 mark to see her record-breaking swim on the official Pac-10 stremaing video site.
