John Walgast from Fort Collins, Colorado has announced his verbal commitment to in-state Colorado Mesa University. He will make the five-hour drive southwest to Grand Junction in the fall of 2021.

Walgast is a senior at Rocky Mountain High School. He swims year-round with Fort Collins Area Swim Team and is a versatile swimmer with Futures cuts in the 200 free, 200 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM.
After missing out on his junior year high school season because of COVID-19, Walgast unleashed a torrent of best times in December 2020 at the FAST Winter Showcase and the CSC-Lakeside Dual in Indiana. Those included the 100/200 free, 100/200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM.

Colorado Mesa won both the men’s and women’s meets at the 2021 RMAC Championships in February. Walgast will be a high-impact player from the outset. His best times would have scored in the A finals of the 200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM and the B final of the 100 free.
He told SwimSwam, “In addition to the great coaches and swimmers at the University, the town of Grand Junction, Colorado (where Mesa is located) really helped me to decide on going to Colorado Mesa University. Grand Junction has so many outdoor recreational opportunities. I plan on majoring in Outdoor Recreation Industry Studies. There is no better location for that.”
