Joao De Lucca Breaks Phelps’ 200 Freestyle Pool Record At The Michigan Open

During the second day of the University of Michigan Open between Michigan, Louisville, and other Club Wolverine post grad swimmers, we saw several NCAA A cuts. Michigan earned two relay A cuts and Louisville senior Joao De Lucca won led off the 800 freestyle relay with another cut.

The Men’s Meet

The Michigan started off the day with the fastest time in the nation in the 200 medley relay. The relay touched the wall at 1:25.40, beating out Louisville by a few seconds.

Kyle Whitaker and Dylan Bosch led the Wolverines to a 1-2 finish in the 400 IM at 3:50.51 and 3:51.81. Ryan Massey was third for Louisville at 3:52.74.

Club Wolverines Sean Fletcher won the 100 fly at 46.64, followed by Aaron Young and Pedro Coutinho from Louisville finished second and third at 46.76 and 47.52.

Ruben Izarra and Trevor Carroll finished first and second in the 200 freestyle for Louisville at 1:37.73 and 1:38.08. Michigan’s Dylan Bosch finished third at 1:38.38.

Louisville’s Kameron Chastain won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.31. Zachary Hayden, swimming unattached, was second at 54.96. Addison Bray finished third for the Cardinals at 55.00.

CW’s Sean Fletcher won the 100 backstroke in 47.55. Louisville’s Nicholas Hasemann was second at 48.03. Jacob Hanson was third for CW at 48.24.

The Michigan men ended up winning the 800 freestyle relay, coming from behind to win after Joao De Lucca’s lead off split for Louisville broke Michael Phelps’ pool record, swimming a 1:33.34. The Michigan men won the relay at the end, touching the wall at 6.22.87.

The Women’s Meet

The Michigan women opened day 2 with a 1:38.83 to win the 200 medley relay. Louisville finished second at 1:39.04.

Louisville’s Abigail Chin won the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.83. Courtney Beidler touched the wall at 4:17.74. Carly Munchel was third for Louisville at 4:20.93.

Devon Bibault and Mary Mittel went first and second in the women’s 100 butterfly. They touched the wall in first and second at 54.50 and 55.67. Michigan’s Elizabeth Harty was third at 55.84.

Abigail Houck led Louisville to a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 freestyle. Houck posted a 1:47.88. Following the 200 freestyle, Andrea Cottrell led Louisville to another 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breaststroke. She posted a time of 1:01.17. In the final individual event of the day, Louisville swept the 100 backstroke, led by a 54.10 from Mackenzie Buss.

Louisville won the final relay of the day, posting a 7:16.17 in the 800 freestyle relay. The Louisville B relay finished second at 7:27.41.
